Got an idea in my head for a project involving a spatha from the sixth century. What I lack is a good reference. Everything I've looked for has shown me old rusted Roman swords from the time period but no reproductions or other images to draw from. If anyone has a link to a reproduction of a sixth century spatha (preferably from Brittania) or any other pertinent information about this type of sword, please post it here.
EDIT: I got the wrong time period. Fourth Century Roman Spatha was what I should be looking for. I apologize for my mistake.

Wouldn't the 6th century (CE) be considered the Migration era. It would be helpful to do a bit of search of Migration Era swords at other sword fora such as myarmoury.com or SFI. Wikipedia is a good place to start. I know a good bit about roman spatha from 3rd century but 6th century swords are out of my league Might also want to check out some ring hilt swords. They are quite fashionable during the Migration period. I think Armart might have some reproduction of some ring swords here but I can't confirm if they are really 6th century swords. Hope others could help you out with more info.

At that point, though it's semantics, it would be a Byzantine Spatha.. And so far as I know... they changed next to nothing from the original incarnation.

Not exactly though. If the OP is referring swords from the region of Brittania or Western Roman empire...well its pretty much gone by the time the 6th century got around. Of course it would be an entirely different matter if the OP is referring to Byzantine Spatha, that I know nothing about them. But yeah you are right the word spatha is a pretty generic term, though there are some subtle differences in the so called "transitional Migration era spatha" as compared to the earlier 3rd cen spatha and the later viking sword. At this point, I don't really know much about them. Almost forgot about the reproduction spatha by Patrick Barta: www.templ.net/english/weapons-antiquity_and_early_middle_age.php

I amend my search. I was working towards an Ambrosius Aurelianus project and got my time periods mixed up. I am looking for a 4th Century Roman Spatha. I was two hundred years off. This explains why I kept getting migration era swords. Please pardon my mistake and offer any recomendations you feel would be helpful.

Not sure if it's quite what you're looking for, but check out the Albion models and handle one if you can. It's a pretty unique experience. I've personally handled this one. www.albion-swords.com/swords/alb ... spatha.htm
