The best combination of function and looks that is closest to the historical gladius would be the Windlass Mainz or Windlass Pompeii. Both are below $200. But if you really want something much better, nothing beats the kris cutlery gladius in function and looks. It's about $285 plus shipping but for extra $85, you get a lot more sword than anything else in the gladius-like object in the $200 range.

It's technically not a gladius, and backordered at the moment, but Windlass has this: They call it the qama, which is a variant of the kindjal, a Cossack dagger that looks nothing like this (nor does a true qama, since they're basically the same thing, just from different countries). It's essentially a gladius for ridiculously cheap and quite functional. If you're a little skilled with woodwork and not afraid of a bit of a project, I'd say you can get this, carve up a grip, pommel, and guard out of wood, and tada~ Functional gladius for under 100$. However, if you want something finished, Windlass offers a number of gladii that are all fairly functional (at least, so the reviews say), and there's the Gen 2 models, such as the one Wyndel posted. Again, it's also backordered, but I've heard many good things about the Valiant Armoury Praetorian. For that, you'd probably want to e-mail Sonny Suttles, head of VA, and ask him for a ballpark on when he might have some more, if, indeed, they still carry them.

Popular sword style. I'm not sure about VA and Sonny though, sent him an email about a week ago on a model and asking about ÍÞ being in stock with no reply yet. So he may be busy w/ new swords or customizations, and be slow to reply maybe?
I would god for the KC personally. A bit over your range, but nore than worth it!

A great point. Bear in mind as well that Kris Cutlery will do a 4 month layaway, so you can put a payment down on it and still have enough left over to get another sword. Best of both worlds.
