Hung Shing True Sharp () Unokubi-Zukuri Katana
Introduction:
Hello,
I was looking for a new katana when I saw "a.jordan's" review on another Hung Shing sword (I will link to his review at the end of mine). It looked nice and the more I read the more I liked. Then I looked at Ricky's videos and had to see if it was too good to be true. So I sent dadaochen a pm and that Friday I ordered the Unokubi-Zukuri Katana.
Historical Overview:
There really is nothing historical on this sword. It was made to be a cutter nothing more.
Full Disclosure:
I have no ties with Hung Shing True Sharp / Ricky. I have only talked to him by pm. In no way will that have anything to do with my review. I'm just an everyday normal backyard cutter.
Initial Impressions:
I ordered the sword on a Friday and got it the following Wednesday. It arrived in the normal long box packed well. The first thing that I noticed right out of the box was the cheap fittings but it was expected since it is a Performance Cutter (more on that later). Once I got past the fittings the sword was great, the blade was breath taking cool. The saya was nice looking but nothing fancy.
Statistics:
Total Length- 99cm
Blade Length- 68.5cm
Handle Length- 30.5cm
Thickness- 0.6cm
Width of Blade- 3.5cm
Balance W: 13.5 cm
Total Wt: 2 lbs.
(note- these specs are copied as posted on the Hung Shing webpage)
Components:
The blade- My fav part on this sword. It looks great. This sword is sharp and I'm not talking your everyday sword sharp, I mean 'make a razor blade feel like jelly' it's so sharp. I didn't know how I would feel about the 2 x bo-hi but I love it. You have to look really close and you will see a nice little hamon. I do wish it was a little more visible but that's ok.
The Handle/Tsuka:
It was wrapped in blue cotton nice and tight. The core is nice and tight on the tang. I do wish it was a little less straight and more curved with the blade but that's just personal preference and does not affect cutting or use in any way. It feels really good in your hands and over all I'm really happy with the handle.
The Guard/Tsuba:
Let me start out by saying I knew before I bought this sword that in came with cheap fittings to keep costs down. Now with that said- wow I really do hate the tsuba. It's metal but it looks like plastic with some kind of bird on it.
What's funny is when I was unboxing it my grandmother that knows nothing about swords says "I like the sword a lot but I don't like that. Looks fake." and points to the tsuba. I was no more good and she looked at me crazy when I started laughing hard. Then I told her they are not fake but cheap. However I will say that it does fit tight.
Fuchi-Kashira:
As with the rest of the fittings not much to say but cheap looking with the same bird on it as the tsuba and they fit tight.
Over all the fittings are tight and will get the job done but are cheap and look REALLY cheap. I will be getting new ones.
The Scabbard/Saya:
The saya looks good and it fits tight with no noise or rattle. When I go to put the sword in about a quarter of the way down it acts like it doesn't want to go and I kind of feel the blade cut into the wood a little. I have to kind of play with it a little to get it to go in easy. I'm not sure why this happens and it does worry me a little about possibly dulling the super sharp blade.
Handling Characteristics:
OMG this is the part of the review where it gets good. This sword handles like a dream. Ii can stop and go on a dime. It's light and sooo easy to move. This sword really does feel like part of my body. I wish I knew more words and ways to explain it. the handling is just so great.
Test Cutting:
Ill let the video do the talking
Conclusions:
I really like this sword; it cuts like a dream and handles well. Buying the sword was easy. Ricky was really helpful and fast to answer any questions. I do wish would give the option to put better fittings on the sword for a little more added to the price.
Pros:
-The blade looks and feels great
-Super super sharp
-Handles like a dream
-Price
Cons:
-FITTINGS- cheap and cheap looking (but are tight)
-Saya- looks good but kind of a fight to get it in with out feeling the sword cut wood
-Handle- just my personal preference but I wish it was a little more curved with the blade (as said before this does not affect cutting or use in any way)
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this to a friend as the value for money on this sword is very high. I would buy this again and plan on buying another sword from Ricky very very soon. This sword does what he said it would-- Cuts and by GOD it cuts GOOD. The blade alone is worth every $ I paid so in all I'm very very happy.
