Hello all, (Not sure where to post this question, Hope I haven't knocked off anybody), But I'm on a break right now, designing a sheath (in mind and spare time) lately and been wondering what percentage I should make black, or brown leather.( ) Been studying up on "double-stitch" etc. for sheath making. I want to build the best. I'll start: I prefer brown boots, brown belt, black for wallet, black for my leather jackets. My sheath should be brown to match my belt. Black would be OK though. Thanks in advance for replies as I don't have my steel yet ( ) for this knife design, I'm focusing on the sheath , just to keep busy for now. Oh, hopefully ,tonight I'm planning a "Cuir Boille" project (French for "boiled leather") (In wax) to check shrinkage rate, etc. Thanks in advance for answering the poll /thoughts.

Derek, this sounds like a great idea, and you're combining some of the best colors around to make this sheath, I like it! That said, would it be possible to know how big your knife is going to be, so we know what to imagine in terms of a sheath? Is it going to be a smaller fixed blade, or maybe a large folder? I'm assuming a fixed blade if you're making a sheath, but I'm not certain. If you're looking for inspiration in terms of coloration with the black/brown theme, check out Lance Parrish's website ( www.southpawleatherworks.com/). If you look at his gallery he does a ton of stuff in black and brown and most of it is very nice. I personally have a plain black sheath from him for my EDC blade (see Rick Barrett Tactical Yoroi-Doshi tanto thread in this subforum) and it looks just plain mean.

^^^^^^^^^Hi Aaron W.^^^^^^^^^^, Thanks for the (QUICK) reply to clarify, this is a push-dagger,leather sheath that will fit along the belt. Also it will (hopefully) have atleast a hole rivited on for neck wear, or jacket carry. I'm just wondering to make most black leather OR brown leather stained? The handle will be stiped cocobolo (brown and black) OR winewood similar. (Like "brindle" stripes...pound for pound the most lethal  ) Also the (short) blade will have Hamon (hopefully as it will probably be 1095 steel) ... BTW, You did not vote on the poll, Please vote on brown or black leather...Got to go back to some scrap metal work now. I'll be thinking on this though.

Thanks Mr. Chris.(Good to get a reply from yourself!) For myself, I'll use dark brown so it can go with my belt AND black I suppose. (Maybe I answered myself again(?)thanks) Thing is this dagger is about 5.5" inch total, and I'll get atleast 12 from the six foot steel I'll have soon. I have enough good quality leather (I obtained for free last week) to make around 50 sheaths! The first one I produce will be donated towards a cause I care about, BTW. Since I don't have the steel yet I'm focusing on the sheath(s) for now. I have some High carbon (scrap) steel of unknown grade, I could cut one out for sizing for use in fitting the sheaths. Not certain what color to go with for the rest though : Brown or Black is all. I'd post this in my begginers' thread but then I can't do a poll. Thanks to others for voting (In Advance).

well with that much leather mix it up. some solid black, some brown, and then do some bands of back and forth, and then do some with the edge/outline in one colour and the front/back another
