so i got my first katana, a ronin dojo pro katana (the "gentleman" tsuba). it's pretty great, sharp, fast, and was able to slice the box it came in with one stroke.
it's got the wrap around the saya of rope. am i supposed to untie that and use that as a belt? i thought normal katana had some other belt to go with it. in movies people would just stick the katana in the belt they already have on and it didn't look like they were connected to the saya. other katana pics have a wrap around the saya. i didn't want to untie it because it looks like a complicated knot style and i'm not that good with knots (was never in the scouts)
thanks in advance!

The obi is the belt you see them put their katana in; the sageo is the cord that is tied into the obi to secure the katana. The way it is tied is a decorative knot that serves no purpose except looking good. For more info on exactly how you're supposed to tie it for use and wear it, I recommend this video:
Nishiuchi-shihan's accent is a little thick, so if you're unfamiliar with Japanese, it may sound a little odd, but he shows you very clearly just what to do.

I still have trouble getting my Obi right As for the Saego (thats the rope around the Saya) knots. I leave mine on too as ive tryed to re-tie them and to get them to look decent is VERY hard! either that or i take them off completely but i like the look of them still tied up
