I know less than nothing about the katana, even after spending a week on this forum reading as much as I could handle.
My wife said she would by me one for my birthday. I am ready.
my requirements are great:
must be from a reputable forge
must be extremely sharp
must be "battle ready" (a real sword that can dispatch a ZOMBIE, if need be)
must be attractive as well as functional (as it will be hanging on the wall for everyone to admire)
Now the REAL "hooker", It must be under $400 shipped
I'll need it pretty quick as there is a real influx of ZOMBIES in our neighbor hood. (plus my birthday, ya know)
thanks, everyone for your input. please include a link with your recommendations

You would be in good shape with hanwei. Anything from the practical series will be solid and you'll have some coin left from that $400. But if you want to get as much as possible for that coin, the bamboo mat would be the way to go.

the raptors are good swords,i own one,but if you're willing to spend $400 i really think the bamboo mat is the one you should go for www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... Mat+Katana at this price its a bargain, and i doubt you'll get a better sword for that money

My Hanwei Bbamboo Mat will be here tomorrow!
Now that is super fast shipping.
The zombies in my neighbor hood are starting to tremble with the thought of this ole man with a Bamboo Mat. ( maybe they are just laughing)

My Hanwei Bamboo Mat came today safe and sound.
I am very satisfied with it and the wooden box that it came in is very nice.
no rattles, every thing seems to fit well and looks nice. I'll have to assume that it is very sharp. I am impressed with the black lacquer finish on the saya. It looks about 3 feet deep! The hamon is very nice.
I do have one question, on the top edge of the tip of the sword, for about 1 1/2-2 inches, it is a gray clor like the hamon. a very straight line on the top edge dividing this portion from the res of the top edge. what is that all about?
right now I am one happy camper and the neigbor hood zombies had best leave the neighbor.
Karma given tp all of you folks that helped me.

It's just a turn back. Most DH katana will be clayed so that the hamon turns back and runs along the mune(spine) for a little bit. Sorry about the picture quality, this is a very old picture. You can see the turn back here, though yours will likely look different. Is this what you're taking about?

He's talking about the spot on the mune between the yokote and the tip of the kissaki. Many (most?) have a bit of a matte texture to the polish there though I'm not sure why...

We have plenty of old people around here holding swords.. I'm not about to give either Dave Kelly or Greybeard any form of flack over it.
