Hello all. I searched through the threads and didn't find anything about this. I have some minor scratches and one fairly noticeable scratch on the side of my katana. can I use these: www.stewmac.com/shopby/item/6043 ... 2011-10-gp to polish out the scratches? This is the scratch Im trying to fix as must as possible: Attachments:

Hmm... that is a pretty deep scratch. You would need to use at least 320 to gradually remove material to the bottom of it if you wanted to erase it. Personally, I would take it as a prided "battle scar" rather than take away the required amount of steel to fix it. But again, if it really bothers you, fix it by all means. You will just need some lower grit paper or perhaps even a stone to get a scratch of that depth out.

That is a pretty deep scratch. The last time I tried to polish something that deep out, I had to go down to 100 grit. Since it was a Euro with a pretty thick blade, taking off that much material wasn't a big deal, it actually balanced the blade better. But on a katana with what I would assume to be competition geometry, I wouldn't want to try and take that much material off of the blade, it could really play havoc with the balance of the blade.

Thanks for the input guys. I don't want to erase it all the way, more like smooth out the area around it so that all you feel is the indent and not the slight raised metal around it. I was thinking of using some 400 grit and working my way up the ladder from the link I provided. Would those papers do the job?

I don't see why not. And they're cheap enough, even for the whole set, that you aren't out much if they don't. I intend to get a set as some of my blades have ball pommels, and a paper/rag like this might ease the process

I've never tried these particular sheets but at $2+ per sheet (if I'm understanding the ad correctly) it seems expensive. I usually buy a pack of 50 sheets for around $30-$40 a pack. this brand does claim that they last longer than regular ones but how much longer? I think this is the place I got my last pack/packs www.detailsupplyonline.com/product_info.php?cPath=125&products_id=553

Frank, these also appear to be like a wash cloth, v.s. the stiff/semi-rigid sand paper, so for certain operations they might be better (hard to get to curves and ball pommels never seem to behave on sandpaper for me.)
