I've been lurking on your forums for a few weeks now. Reading and learning. I thought some of you might be interested in hearing what I've gleaned here at SBG. First a little background. I'm a 50 something who enjoys collecting old Case pocketknives and recently just had the unexplicable urge to buy a serious ass "Samauri" sword. I've seen alot of shinny "fake" ones at some knife shows thru the years but I knew they wouldn't do. So I did a Google search and luckily found you guys. After many many hours of reading through the threads in the Japanese sword section I finally decided which new Katana (Katanas) I wanted. I didn't even know that term before reading it here. I'd like to eventually work up to slaying a few dozen water bottles in my back yard. Then being confident enough to sleep with that bad boy next to my bed hoping some jackoff breaks in so I can give him the surprise of a lifetime ...
I wanted to buy two swords to start off with. First would be a "beater upper" that I wouldn't be upset ruining with a newbies poor striking angles. Then I thought i'd just look thru the available nice ones until I found that particular sword that really "talked" to me. I found them both. First I read all the "newbie" threads and all the advice you guys gave. I took all that information and wound up buying a Hanwei Practical Elite. I really didn't see the point in paying the extra 80 bucks for the Elite Plus for a slightly wider blade (1/8th inch I think I recall reading) and a little bit better "furniture". I'm gonna beat the heck out of it anyway. I bought it from Amazon for $165. No shipping because I'm a "prime" member.

(BTW she passed the paper cutting test right out of the box...like "buttar"!)
Then I went on a search for my "Holy Grail". Boy there's a stagering amount of great choices out there. I really wanted to keep things relatively sane so I looked at Katanas priced up to one large. (that's a grand- $1000 for you generation X guys  )
This is the sword I would not use until I got pretty good with the "beater". It had to talk to me first though. The first and only sword that has so far is this one. www.manventureoutpost.com/produc ... atana.html
But strangely enough that's not the sword I bought. I began reading a little deeper into past threads and I learned that Hanwei decided to choose my exact "Holy Grail" sword to adorn their new "super steel" with as an anniversary issue Shinto that unfortunately is no longer in production. However two models are. The Lion Dog and Bamboo Mat. It just so happens that "Kult Of Athena" is currently running a special sale on the Bamboo Mat. A sign from God? To make an even longer story shorter...I ordered one. Suppose to be here this coming Tuesday. I'll take a few shots of it when I get her and post them if you all would like. I know full well these are not toys but potentially lethal weapons and I plan on keeping all my fingers and toes where they are. I read thru the advice given here and I'm moving in a slow regulated pace. I already bought a wooden Katana to practice with and the CD series from this guy.www.amazon.com/Samurai-Swordmans ... pd_sim_sg7
Yes I know what you warn about learning thru tapes. A live teacher is better for many reasons but .. but..but...
Anywho I'm really looking forward to my new venture. Hope I didn't bore many of you. Just thought you might enjoy reading a thread from a newbie who hasn't asked any questions. Who knows. Maybe an old fart like me has a few good swings left in 'em.
Peace Mike
