Well, finding myself newly addicted to swords I went and furthered the habit with a Cheness 33" O-Katana... ;D Figured if they don't make them again I would be kicking myself for missing out... Any one have one yet? To start I got the Cheness Tenchi, shortly followed by the Musashi Rosewood Shirasaya, then another Shirasaya (for a friend) and the Musashi Wind Dragon. A few Bokken... Will it ever stop? ![:D](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Great forum folks, like the vibe. ![:D](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) JW

As a matter of fact, I do have the Cheness O Kat! ;D
It is a fantastic sword that is nice if you're tall, cause it'll feel more appropriate than if your using something like Musashi's rosewood shirasaya. It's a little heavier though, but you should expect that from a larger sword... it also comes with a nice crane tsuba, so it looks better than alot of the non-bling Cheness swords.
I want to get the money together to buy some more Cheness swords, here, at the sbg sword store. Paul has a great thing going with that store.
And yes... you are a slave to this obsession. Kiss all your extra money goodbye and say hello to more Musashi and Paul Chen.... just kidding! ;D

how about the cheness 30" Nagasa : www.chenessinc.com/30inch.htm ? it looks like a cool compromize between a regular blade and the O-katana... and at only 3lbs it seems like it might handle pretty well... i'm looking for my first katana and while i'm not exceptionally tall or anything (5'10") i sort of like the look of the slightly longer blade. right now the nagasa is up against the kaze and the shura in my book... anyone have any thoughts on the nagasa? think a first time katana buyer should start with a standard blade instead? i'll bet it makes a mean cutter... but i wonder if its as durrable as the shura and tenchi...

As I'm only 5'8 and I've always felt that 28'' of blade is too short(though proper), I'd say the 30'' Nagasa would work well for your 5'10''.
Also note that the 3lbs is the weight with saya(i believe).
As for the koshirae, I think the 30'' nagasa is the most attractive sword that Cheness Sells, and considering that it's the same steel and heat-treat as the Tenchi/Shura, you can't go wrong.
From an engineering standpoint, there will be more stress on the tang and tsuka when the blade impacts near those extra 2 inches of length, but considering the strength and elasticity of the steel, I don't it'll make a differeince.

it seems like the nagasa got a pretty good reception over at the beginners sword forum: forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?t=77583 . some nice pictures there too! i was leaning towards the kaze at first... but now it seems the nagasa is winning me over. the only thing i might want to change is the tsuba. the crane is cool, but a bit to "busy" for me (i tend to like simple... although if someone could make my avatar into a tsuba... ![;)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ). i know that some of the early nagasa had the shura's tsuba on them...i wonder if i can find one of those. if not maybe i'll just order and extra tsuba and change it myself (hey Paul, could I do that through the SBG store? ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ). oh, and some of the guys at SFI mentioned having to be careful while drawing this blade due to its extra two inches. i don't know anything about the proper way to draw a katana... anyone think those guys were just a bit on the short side, or is this something i might want to be wary of at my height of 5'10" (if i ever learn the proper form, which i'd like to do eventually ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) )

Hello David, I think they might have a point regards the drawing of the katana and it is something that you should consider especially if you intend to take up some form of sword training in the future.I am 6foot tall and get on quite well with a 28" blade and find it very comfortable to draw, remember that the cheness blade measurment is the nagasa which is from the habaki to the tip so overall will be over 29" from tsuba

thanks for the advice handforgedkatanas ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I actually went ahead and ordered the cheness Nagasa from the SBG store about a week ago. hopefully it will arrive any day now ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ! when i get it i plan on taking some pictures and writing up a review, and i'll try to include if the length allows for a comfortable draw (i'll do some research and try to reference proper technique in this case, but without any real training my comments might not be worth too much ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) )
