Hi everyone, I got a question for all of you. Does anybody know anything about this Nagamaki ? swordsofmight.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=172Who makes it ? Does anyone out there own one ? Has anyone even laid their "eyeballs" on one in real life ? If nothing else, the price is very attractive. Maybe we can get Kriegschwert to buy one and give us the lowdown !

Hmmm, it looks interesting and the price is right. I'll have to give it some thought, though. ;D

Sorry for baiting you like that Krieg, just having a little fun ! Seriously though I'm getting some funny rumblings comming from my credit card ! I may just have to breakdown (again!) and bite the bullet, and do it. Just one week after recieving my Cheness Kaze from the SBG Katana store,(By the way,Thanks Paul !) I need to get "something" new. I'll keep you posted !

Oh, man! 88mm, I'm gonna have to hunt you down now... ;D You KNEW I was looking for a short bladed Masahiro or Musashi (something in a wakizashi or ko katana), and that's why you lead me to this site! Like I don't already have enough cheap Japanese style swords and enough other blades to buy as well? Oh, you sneaky $%&*#@$!!! You knew I'd find this: swordsofmight.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=347... ;D Well, hell, at least the 1796 sabers I'm looking at won't be available for between 1-2 months (possibly longer), so I do need something to fill the gap until then...

Ronin has one, have a look in the forum album !
I counted two mekugi, wonder how long the tang is ?? I have heard of the tsuka on a Hanwei miyamoto musashi katana snapping off at the end, due to a shorter tang . Hmm, I wonder ?!

I have heard of the tsuka on a Hanwei miyamoto musashi katana snapping off at the end, due to a shorter tang . Hmm, I wonder ?! Good point, chop. The second mekugi appears to be just a wee, tiny bit past the halfway point on the tsuka, so the tang could end an inch beyond that, or it could go to the end of the tsuka...

Krieg, I swear I didn't see that Ko-Katana there ! That would be like giving a pyromaniac a can of gasoline and a book of matches ! The price makes it pretty irresistible. I thought you might be hovering around the Cheness website coveting the new Tenchi Ko-Kat (I'm doing that too!). At least with the more expensive swords, there is a little (and I mean little!) restraint, but when one of these things is less than $100.00, every fiber in my being is screaming, buy it !, buy it now dammit ! I remember the Furubushido 1024 Tanto incident like it was yesterday ! So I feel your pain "brutha". My one saving grace is I have no knowledge or interest (yet!) in any other types of swords. But who knows, I may fall victim to the "Darkside" just like the rest of you guys !

Thats an awefull cheap nagamaki,I have the Dynasty Forge one, cost me about 10 times as much! Cold Steel have one out too(from the same factory as Dynasty but thru hardened). I can tell you that the Dynasty ones have a very long tang, takes up most of the tsuka.

Maybe Jason from Swords of Might could break one of those nagamaki down and take a look for us?

He joined the other day and posted in the "300 swords help" thread, so I just sent him an email directing him to this thread. Hopefully, he'll be able to get a look "under the hood" at that tang for us.

Hi Guys! I am here to tell you I just disassembled the nagamaki and here is the verdict: The tang is almost 15" into the tsuka. The last mekugi hole is only about an inch and a half from the end of the tang. Got a pic for ya too:

Thanks for the info, Jason. According to your measurements, that would leave roughly 8" of unsupported tsuka at the end. I don't know how a nagamaki is wielded, so I can't really comment as to whether or not this is acceptable... Anybody? I mean, would a person normally place one hand clear at the end of the tsuka on a typical nagamaki to make a cut, or would your hand be placed closer to the center of the tsuka?

Ya got me. I have cut alot with this sword and I would have to say it is a great cutter, but I am sure I am using improper form and not sure if it would work for anyone else. Oh well, being an inexperienced swordsman, all I can do is give ya the stats...
