Actually the ancient world (define ancient however you like) was quite "advanced" by our standards. The ancient europeans traded all across from the mediterranean to Cornwall, Ireland, the Baltic and down to Zimbabwe. They had advertisments , complex diplomatic relations, internal heating and hot water, sewers and toilets, advanced mechanical constructions and astronomy knowledge. Most of these advances are of greek or mesopotamian origin. China was fairly advanced as well.
