I have an old iron sword that I want to restore the sheen to. I looked around the net and couldn't find any tutorial or advice on how to bring back the luster to an iron blade. Does anyone know, aside from sanding, what would work and what would take off the old tarnish and bring back a nice shine?

metal glo polishing paste or a buffing wheel, both options will only take off surface imperfections. however if this sword is an antique i strongly suggest u leave restoration to an expert( if you attempt restoration its very likely u could make it completely worthless) or just plain leave it as it is

I understand the suggestion, but this is a blade I have specifically to work and restore, so I want to get the sheen back. Other than metal glo, what else is there? There are little to no write-ups on iron blades.

a pic of the blade would be nice. maybe someone would know shortcuts depending on the condition of the blade. there are quite a few polishing articles on here. steel is iron with some carbon and some other elements in the mix, should polish up the same

I just buffed out a new sword I purchased that had a pretty crappy polish. used a strop block with common green honing compound. used a knife to get most of honing compound off the strop, blade perpendicular to leather and scrape. cleaned blade and strop with rubbing alcohol. reprepped the strop with choji oil and a warm palm. used plain strop on blade. obviously this wont work magic if the corrosion is deep.
