Hello everyone, I am new here, and real glad to join this site. There is PLENTY of information all over about the big buck swords, but thankfully this one is not your average site. Thanks Paul!
I have decided to get myself a Cheness katana for a 50th birthday present to myself. I am really impressed with the reviews I have read on the 9260 spring steel Shura and Tenchi.
However, I am also interested in hearing about the real entry level katanas, the Maru and Ranko. They look real nice, especially for the $129.99 price tag. The Mokko looks interesting also, but I have not read anything about any of these entry level swords. If anyone has any information on these swords, please post it.
I am not a martial artist and only plan to cut a few pool noodles and similar things with the sword, but I would also like it to be of a decent quality. Who wants to collect junk? I found out a long time ago with collecting knives, that it is better to have one quality knife rather than a bunch of cheapos.

Hello Steve, You are definately on the right track thinking about the ranko,i have owned one myself for over a year and for the targets you are thinking about it is perfect.I think cheness under rate this katana in their summary and it is a lot better than they say, obviously if you want to start cutting tatami and bamboo then go for the 9260 steel, yes i have a tenchi, but the ranko is fantastic with the same standard of finish as most of the cheness katanas and also the kissagi is more pleasing to the eye as it is slightly flared, possibly to compensate for the weaker steel compared to the 9260 but all in all an excellent katana for the price. As for the maru i think it is let down by the tsuba but thats just my personnal opinion, hope that helps you a bit Steve and good luck. Rod.
