Today one of my friends was thinning out his gun collection and he gave me a call to see if i was interested in any. Im more of a sword and knife guy, but I've debated picking up a gun and learning to shoot. so i bought his 1945 Turkish Mauser. Its in pretty good condition and im looking forward to taking it to the range.

The ammunition put out by winchester, federal, and remington is puny. They load it way down. Sellier & Bellot is a good brand. If you want a load that replicates the original without being corrosive, check out www.mauser.org.

Thanks for the link! I think that going with ammo as close to the original as possible would be much more enjoyable.

I'm a gun collector that specializes in Mausers. If you need info, let me know. I have a German K98 that I shoot the mitchells ammo through with really good accuracy. Also, if you ever want a "tactical" bolt gun, you can send that gun to E.R. Shaw, put about $500 in it, and have a complete custom rifle in any standard caliber you could want. The actions are tougher than just about anything on the market in the sub $1000 range. I have a .25-06 that was built from a turk mauser. It's a tack driver. Try some of the romanian surplus 8mm. It has 153 grain bullets. Your mauser may shoot them better than the 198 grain bullets. If you use surplus (all of the surplus is corrosive, no matter what anybody tries to tell you) spray some brake cleaner down the barrel, wait a few minutes, wipe it out with a patch, and go through a normal cleaning procedure. That's what I do, and my barrels are still pristine.

I picked up a Turkish Mauser a few a years back from a guy who may as well be a relative now. I'd shot it and some of his others previously, very fun guns. Not had a chance to shoot my own, though; at least, not while it's been "my own," that is. I've also got an old Gewehr 88 chambered to modern 8mm Mauser, but it needs a new barrel (there's a very slight bend in its current) and probably some other repairs before I load anything into it. Almost bought a German K98 once, but the week before I'd lost my wallet over the side of a boat on a fishing trip, and the guy wouldn't sell without local ID. Had my military, but VA was slow in sending my state. $125, it was. Surplus, like-new-in-box stuff.

That's some darn good info! I have a Yugo Mauser 98 and a case of surplus 8mm ammo. I almost never shoot it due to the chore of cleaning the bore with soap and water. I didn't know this about brake cleaner (I assume Gun Scrubber will work the same). Armed with this info, I predict a lot more "Mauser time" in my future. Thanks Onimusha!

Thanks for the info Findlithui! i never would have guest we had a gun smith here. The friend i bought it from said hes fired at least 20 rounds from it since hes had it. Still though i planned on having it checked out to make sure. (better safe then sorry) I have a question i forgot to ask, does anyone here know the wisconsin laws on owning a rifle and target shooting?

throat erosion won't make the gun blow up, but it will make it shoot crappy. Hey, Findlithui, do you do a lot of nagant work? I've worke under a gunsmith for several years. I've built 2 mauser sporters, some 700s, and an M1 match rifle, but the guy I learn from is old school. He has no knowledge of nagants and has no intention of gaining any. He regards them as commy crap and won't touch one. I have seen some nice rifles made from nagants, I'd like to know more about them. For instance, how do you align that pu sniper mount before you drill the holes? Also, have you ever rebarreled one?

Out of curiosity is it possible to inspect it through well lit, well detailed pictures? Having a bit of trouble finding a smith that i dont have to drive a bit for lol

Yeah, I do ok. Whooped butt at the 600 yard highpower match anyway. As far as the bores go, I have a nagant with a horrible-looking bore, but it shoots 1/4 MOA with steel core surplus. The only way to really know if a rifle barrel is bad is to shoot the darn thing. If I put a new barrel on mine, I'd make it headspace on the shoulder. I'm thinking about making mine into an F-class highpower rifle, just for giggles. Anyway, I can do barrel inspections. I have yet to see a bad action, but turk mausers almost never have good barrels on them. That being said, I had one that shot 1.5MOA with it's bad barrel. When I bought my M1 Garand, the barrel was so worn that the only way you could tell it had rifling was to shine a light down the bore and look for lines, but it held 3MOA. I've been very lucky in that regard. I see our freind is in wisconsin. He's probably closer to you.
