Greetings, I hope this is the proper place to inquire about a sword and sheath I have had for over 23 years (photo link below). I assume the sword is of Mexican origin, but I cannot be certain. If anyone could share some insight, or point me toward someone who can provide more information, I would really appreciate it. The inscriptions are in Spanish, and as best I can tell, translate as follows: Solo a mi Dios le Temo - I fear only my God A dios Lucero de mis noches - Goodbye my evening star (Goodbye star of my nights) Primero la muert y despues rendido - First death and then surrender I assume the letters "MSM" are someones initials and the date is September 13, 1939 As for the other engravings, I can only speculate as to their significance. s124.photobucket.com/albums/p5/d ... ?start=all Thank you! Best Regards, Darryl

Sorry to say looks like a tourist trap souvenir. May be some sort of "collectible". Would not recommend cutting with the sword.

It strikes me as a modified machete of some sort. The sheath is definitely modern, it looks very newly-made compared to the sword. No idea what the inscriptions may mean.
Googled September 13th, 1939 and it turned up that in 1847 in Mexico during the Mexican-American War, the fortress Chapultapec Castle was overrun on that date. May have been inscribed and given on a remembrance of that event. That's about all I can derive from it. It's an interesting souvenir but beyond that I don't think it has much value unless you can verify its antiquity.

Thank you for the assist and information. At this time, I am simply trying to find out as much as I can about it. I did not expect it to be worth much...just curious about it since I dug it out.
