New to the site. I used edged weapons in Army service in the Pacific in 70's. Mostly tomahawks, machetes, and khukris were all we had. I am getting back into sharp tools for my SHTF pods and was doing some research. Liked what I saw on DaDaochen's website () and thru Ebay auctions and cutting videos. I sent him some questions and he was prompt, concise and helpful. I purchased the Shinogi Zukuri Ko-katana on Sept. 10th and got it on the 14th. The box was plain but well protected. The blade came in a black double layer cotton bag. The fittings are attractive alloy, but will be replaced with subdued motif due to her intended tactical use. Anyway, the saya was gloss black and tight but not prohibitively so, with no rattles. The blade breaks away from the koiguchi quietly as you would want. The tsuba is tight, tsuka and koshira are all wrapped with a cotton type ito and are tight with no evidence of play. Now for the payoff...the T10 blade was razor sharp out of the saya. How sharp you ask? Well, my wife was watching me take out my latest obsession and brought over a paper towel so I could handle the blade. As the paper towel fell across the ha, it slid off and floated to the floor, cut cleanly. My daughter coming in from college classes saw it and walked over. She asked if the paper towel had been cut that easily. I repeated the experiment and once again the paper towel fell away. I took out a small venison roast and laid it on the counter. From six inches above the surface, I let the blade fall and was pleased to see that it cut the roast into two clean pieces. That's good enought for me for now. I haven't had a chance to do any "serious" cutting. For me, that will come in a few weeks when deer season starts. I will do some tests when I have some "real meat" to sever um...trim. I mean to use this in self-defense situations so it will be used only enough to gain confidence in the handling characteristics. Ricky at Hung Shing TS will be getting more of my money as soon as the Shobu Tantos come in. You need to seriously consider these SHARP blades...Sorry to be long winded, thanks for your time, hope this helps..
