i am going to try my hand at making a shirasaya for an old blade and i was wondering if anyone has tried this? of particular interest is how the habaki fitting is approached. should i make it so that it will not fit at first then file after assembly? or just make it as tight as possible (would prefer this)? I have to say i am really impressed with how well this system works. I bought a Chenness shira and i fully expected it to loose its grip in the saya fairly fast (since the wood is not that hard) but it is nice and tight. Amazing how the Japanese find something that works simply and stay with it.
