I spent $80 for a stainless steel wallhanger when I first started out, so $30 for a carbon steel blade isn't so bad.

Probably not. I don't think the tsuka even came off. I just know that I was like 17, had a pocketful of cash, and I had to have it.

Ronin's a good choice. As for being a newb? Hell, everyone's done it at least once. I have a few wall-hangers myself that are good for the occasional costume party . --Edward

Most of the folks here are really nice. We do have occasional slip-ups, I'll admit! Welcome aboard, glad to have you here, and if I act like a jerk, remind me that I ought'n't.

Hi Tattoomagic! My first sword was bought in CHINA TOWN! XD I mean the LA one haha. It was actually a Katsumoto folded steel, TH blade, which cost me about $180 after haggling haha. It is actually a decent piece, but after this one, I got the musashi shirasaya then a SBG custom. Now I have all those swords plus I have a new obsession with high-end swords so I got a custom MAS L6 katana, and I am in the process of having Pavel Bolf making me a new kat.
No matter what though, we ALL go through some sort of learning curve. I just happened to be lucky that my first blade was a carbon steel one instead of a 440 one. No need to feel bad, just learn and share from your mistakes/experiences and we'll all have a laugh reminiscing about the past. XD

You didnt do too bad - I INTENTIONALLY bought two 440 Stainless steel blades (Kill bill ones - bride and bill) for my dad and brother and I bought a Last Samurai replica 440 stainless) for a wall hanger.
But officially, my first ever sword isnt out yet - Its "Sword of the Stranger" and its pre-ordered. Its my first Carbon Steel blade. But deffinately my first cutter will (hopefully) be a Ronin Dojo Pro or a SBG custom. I just have to wait till December for the ronin restock or order in November for the SBG (I hope I can get an order in)

We were all new at some point. I remember the first "sword" I bought, mostly because I still have a score to settle over it. It was a Toledo(?) katana I paid £300 for, which is give or take $470! I got ripped off big time  It was quite a few years ago now. It's in my store room somewhere, hidden under some other useless junk. The fittings are (we'll say "were" because it's never coming out again) an antiqued alloy, very typical black standard with white samegawa. The blade was so called "damascus" and had no hamon whatsoever. A while later I realised I was robbed blind by a vendor I trusted for years previously (he sold me a lot of outdoor rigs). It was either daylight robbery or ignorance from the both of us. I dismantled the thing realising I wasn't going to learn about real swords, but to learn why this wasn't a sword at all; Glued on and cracked plywood tsuka. Misaligned habaki Cracked saya You name it, complete dismal. So I learned a lot from that mistake and years later I bought some books and did some hard research. Managed to dodge a lot of bullets ever since. I did practice my tsukamaki, sageo tying, and basic woodworking/laquering on it though. I guess it wasn't such a bad thing to keep at the time. Anyway, you've spent low and while I'm sure what you have there is no better, you'll learn your lesson with more cash left in your pockets. What to do with your first? Your first sword is like your first girlfriend; learn from the experience and hope you never cross paths again! Welcome to SBG too.
