Hello my name is Cary I'm looking to buy my first real sword. And like every thing i buy i took some time and look around "started on eBay almost got something worthless" but know I'm looking at Ronin's dojo budget katana line.
but i don't hear much about his budget line all i hear about is the dojo pro line. so let me tell you what I'm looking for and what i will be using it for. that way you can tell me what is good for me.
lets start off with my skill level lets just say unless watching old martial art movies gives me skill then I'm a master. if not my skill level is 0! what i will use the sword for is a back yard cutter bamboo, tatami mats, water bottle etc.) then take and have it look nice at the end of the day. but it will get used i don't want a wall pice. i really cant go over $200 at this time i do plane to speed more on swords down the road when money picks up since i have falling in love with them. i have never liked guns and have always loved the idea of honor and respect. and what says that better then a good old Katana.
PS thank you form letting me join this wonderful forum i plan on being very active.

I have a Ronin Dojo Budget and while I was a bit ticked off at the poor wrapping job it had and some looseness in the rattan wrap around my saya, it is a great, great beginners sword. The blade is sharp and unbelievably tough. The fittings aren't top-flight, but they are sturdy. I would recommend this as a great first sword. I will likely get another in the future. Here is a review I did on it. forum.sword-buyers-guide.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4441The problems I had with this out of the box were purely personal and wouldn't have affected the performance. I have done some heavy cutting and the blade is still sharp, straight and without any chipping. This is probably the best sub-$200 katana out of the box. Also, welcome to the forum. It's a great place. It was also a good idea that you posted some feelers out before buying.

It's my pleasure. If you have to wait 30 or so days, keep looking in at both SBG Store and Ronin Katana, as new shipments are supposed to come in sometime in October, so they may have one you want more.

The Ronin Dojo Pro is a lot better than the Dojo Budget, as are the Kris Cutlery 26 and 29 models, but the Dojo Budget will do everything you ask and is very good itself. If you want to wait and save, that's great. If you want to get the Dojo Budget, that's great too. I really don't see any case of "buyers regret" if you pulled the trigger on the Budget.

Also, if you are intending on cutting, you should look into getting Masayuki Shimabukuro's Samurai Swordsmanship DVD's. You can find them on TPB, or you can watch them on Youtube as well. They have great advice on cutting using correct form, angles, ect. It has helped me a great deal.
