Hi Dao, You're much too young to lack motivation! Ever considered standing meditation/qigong? It's the basis for Yi Quan, and indeed for all Chinese martial arts. There's no real form to worry about, no dojo/kwoon necessary, and you and your body will get to know each other again, whether you're the football sort, or the rugby, or something entirely different. It's very good for improving self-image, and is capable of carrying you well past that. Yi Quan is exploding as the latest, and most esoteric, of the "internal" arts. It was derived from Xing Yi Quan, which maybe the earliest formalized internal style, but the founder thought form [xing] was getting in the way, so he reduced it to strictly yi [wisdom mind] boxing. (It practices mostly standing meditation, and yet was the last art chosen to train the Chinese Imperial Guard and royal bodyguards.) The founder of Yi Quan issued a challenge, and fighters from all over the world came to test him IF they could best any of his top 4 students. None of the four were ever defeated during this, and the students re-named the style Dachengquan, which is how you'll know it in some places. (But there ARE many newspaper-documented contests the founder DID have, with remarkable results). It's your simplest remedy anyway, at least til you find something else. This site has video and excellent e-books for free download: www.yiquan-academy.eu/engstart.htmlIn Japan, it's known as Taikiken: www.taikiken.blogspot.com/As for football vs rugby...I remember when rugby players were drafted in the NFL, and I thought they'd surely excel there. But they didn't. Probably because the NFL is all start and stop sprints (hence the speed and impossibly hard hits) where rugby is more of a marathon/hockey game without skates or soccer match with hands.

Immerse your self in your goal, get obsessed. Keep a magazine by the crapper, read before bed. Get on the forums. Look at photos and videos of what you want to achieve. Once it permeates your thoughts you'll make it a reality. The way will present its self. When I get obsessed with something I can't rest till I see it come to fruition. Get obsessed! I'll wholeheartedly second that. Forums are a great place, as long as you're reading what's there and not purely asking for motivation. Photos and videos are great, especially in this day and age with youtube and veoh and all those other sites. Most of all though, I'd have to go with the magazines, whether e-zines (Martial Arts Mastery by Keith Pascal is a great e-mail based e-zine, along with the online Martial Talk Magazine and The Martialist, once Phil Elmore gets that thing up again) or printed magazines, if you have the cash. Some things in them obviously need to be taken with a grain of salt, but if inspiration is what you seek, they provide. And of course, taking the risk of being chewed out by some hardcore safety guru, find someone you know who's experienced enough to keep things in control, get some padding, and spar. First time you get beat down, it'll just stink, but after a couple times, you'll really develop the desire to get better and better. As it's a more extreme measure, if getting beat down doesn't inspire you, it's time to realize that you have no interest and need to find something else to lose weight.

All I can say is that Motivation should come from will power fueled by extreme interest and dedication. I started Karate and I am always sore to the max, yet I still even train in my own time.

when working out, dont pay attention to the pain (burn). Feeling he burn means that your getting rid of weakness and getting stronger. Get a trainer at a gym to show you the proper excercises.

I guess people are different. I can't imagine not being competitive... Not fighting or wanting to fight... Not pushing myself to the absolute limit. I don't want anyone to be better then me. Some people are... but damn it, I will fight them with every once of energy I have. I will give them hell. I have a fire that burns white-hot in my soul. I suggest you get rid of you television, your nintendo and even your girlfriend (or porn-material). when working out, dont pay attention to the pain (burn). Feeling he burn means that your getting rid of weakness and getting stronger. Get a trainer at a gym to show you the proper excercises. Yes! in the SCA we say that pain is just weakness leaving the body. I know that is not what you were talking about, but it works too. I also think that the gym is a better place to start. It will be cheaper and you will get in shape faster. Once or twice a week of drilling is not enough to get you in shape. If you go to a jojo out of shape, you will be more limited in what you can do. Waste of money. If you are in decent shape, you will keep up better with the class. Centurion2000, I liked your No Excesses vid. There is a guy in the SCA in my area that fights from a wheel chair. He does both singles and melee. He fights side by side with the other warriors. He kills and gets killed in a contact sport that is unforgiving. That means his NOT a handicapped fighter. It means he is a warrior and a brother equal to the rest of us.

Here are, at least, a couple of tools I have learned which keeps me motivated...
I imagine a little bird that rests on my shoulder and I ask it, "Is today my day to die?" If I can still ask that question then I know it is not.
I imagine what it would be like when I am at peace of death and to have crossed over. That usually jogs me out of my complacency.
There is the adage, "Today is a good day to die". I usually take inventory or stock whether I have done everything I have needed to do up to that point in my life. I gauge my choices based on that adage.

Yes shmoopiebear! "Tuesdays With Morie" recounting "the Buddha." I especially like the "Fight Club" version (though not the whole movie). Holding a gun to the quick-mart worker's head and demanding action. Some zen stick! karma for that.

Just a head's up for people...
Pornography is a neutral word. The term has neither a negative or positive implication.

Shmoopiebear, if opinions vary, then why were you making such a deliberation in the first place? Are you sure you understood correctly what laowho was getting at?

Is it just me or have we scared Dao away with our somewhat negative and painful comments. Telling him to "get off his fat arse" and also "lose weight" is a really bloody great thing to say someone who may have a certain tender sensibility about their body image but what the f**k do you guys care? After all you are anonymous people who can say hurtful f**king s**t like that and get away with it because no one is their to punch your lights out. Sure getting up and getting active is a good start but f**king hell! Go easy on the guy and go easy on the comments. My mum had a saying i am reminded of at times like this 'if you can't say anything nice shut the f**k up." I am sorry if I am offending people here but some s**t I really won't just sit back and read without saying anything. This forum runs well because of the respect we have for each other, even as jokes some of the comments on this thread are really p***ing me off. I know the whole "if you don't like it don't read it thing" but when it comes to things like this and the potential that by your jokes or your posts you might drive off a forumite that gives me the f**king s**ts. Be helpful and respectful of other people because everyone you meet is facing a great battle.
Sorry for the language and the rant, I am going to go away now.

you probably could have said that in a better way, but I for one agree completely with what you've said.

Thanks for the kind words laowho.
Slavia631, you are correct. I did mean avoiding distractions. At least until your workout becomes part of your routine. Once you establish a pattern like Mon, Wed, Fri in the gym; Sat, sword training, you can then begin to add other things around that schedule. I spend some time with my GF. I even have time for a PC game here and there and of course I make some time to spend with you fine gentlemen and ladies here at SBG.
Sometimes life interferes and I have a priority system set up in my mind as to how to deal with roadblocks. 1. Job 2. Wed rattan sword and shield fighting 3. three gym days (Mon & Fri + one other flexible day) 4. Sat WMA training. 5. Thurse or Sun rapier (flexible) 6. Dinner with parents (flexible) 7. Time with GF (flexible) 8. Half hour recorded college lecture from Teaching Co. (everyday) 9. Play Postal 2 multiplayer (very flexible) etc...
Don't try to jump straight into something like my schedule. I will be the first to say it is insane and I am probably insane too. The MWF in gym and one day of martial arts is a normal workout.
Sorry if I was harsh at any point. I did not mean it. My mind just gets into training mode when I talk about these things.

choice 1: get ur ass up, go to FU**ING gym and get confident about yourself.
choice 2: watch tv, play some call of duty 4, and act like a 300 lb. fat*ss
I like choice 2 better but I also like feeling strong and fit. The only reason people work out is for health or for competition or both.
