Hello I am thinking about starting kendo and would like to know what people know/think about it.
Is it fun? Is it hard? Expensive?
stuff like that.
Thanks.

Is it fun, from what i have done with my mate it looks extremely boring. It is very hard on your body and it is only expensive if you are trying to buy your armour yourself. Would i recommend it? Absolutely, it is only boring because of repetition but it will toughen you up and it will most definitely teach you to move and strike better.

I think i'm going to leave a rebuttal to that comment to my Compatriot, Tom.

It depends on you to really know if you like so go to a few classes and see how you like it because some people like more styles than others you just have to find the one that suits you. Do you happen to know the name of the dojo your thinking of joining?

I practise Kendo, Iaido and Kobudo at one Dojo!
Kendo: Great fun. The armour is heavy and it's like a turtle - you fall over, you stay down. Shinais make a great sound when they strike the other person. Yes, you do get hits to the legs, arms and stabs that slip up under the chestplate that do leave terrible marks (You should see the marks I've got!)
Iaido: Well, it's adapted. I only know two of the katana kata (reminds me of Banana rama!) so far which are Yotsu no Kaze and Hapo giri. Both easy, we learn more when we go for our sho dan grading.
Kobudo: I don't know many people who do Kobudo, but it is really fun, swinging around Tonfa, Sai, Bo, Nunchaku, Eku, the Cane (great weapon!), rarely the spear and shield (Okinawan stylings)....Quite difficult, I know 10 kata so far...

just bought our grandaughters a shinai each 4 christmas, cuz they're always squarin off w/ my bamboo sticks in the most beautiful/stylized fashion, the way kids do who have sticks but dunno what 2 do w/ them. i posted what i thought were the kendo kata--there are 10 traditionally?--but dunno if it's accurate, as they're usin katana. f/ what little i've read, it's been around either 500- or 1500-years, and is rare in that it was developed strictly as sport, rather than for training of sum other discipline. as such, i've also read that there are only 8 targets for kendo (head variously, throat, wrists, shoulders? and torso). and that this specialization uses forms that won't work 4 katana. its aims are spiritual rather than martial (lame distinction, but there ya go). we're gonna try 2 teach the girls the forms, and even w/o contact it should provide everythin they're already tryin 2 do. below is a 16-second snippet at a kendo tournament--shows a disarm that i thought was only possible in erroll flynn (johnny depp generation?) movies.

I was just curious to what they were doing with them. A shinai can't really hurt them to badly, a bad headache from full strike at most

It's like ancient paintball, lol! I find Kendo to be very fun, in the same way that, say, competitive swimming is fun. If you are an athlete, you will understand the kind of enjoyment I am talking about. If not, then you may just find Kendo to be a bunch of repetitive boring drills that get you doggg tired for no reason. It just depends on your taste I guess.
