Greetings, SBG peeps! I'm pleased to finally join the SBG forum. I have been interested mostly in japanese swords for a while, with some euro interest. I currently have:
Cold Steel Warrior Katana (least favorite, but at least I got it when they had the dragon fittings)
Hanwei Raptor (Shobu Zukuri ... great sword, but fittings are very cheap and the finish is rubbing off too easily)
Hanwei Musashi Iaoto (love it except for the apparently plastic menuki)
Hanwei Tinker Longsword
Arms&Armor Fredrich IV spear (too cool)
I have several projects I'm considering. I love tinkering with things, and I would like to do all of the fittings on a katana save for perhaps the saya. I'm torn between the Hanwei high allow vs the performance series elite blade. There's the difference of several hundred dollars (which can pay for a nice tsuba, menuki, fuchi, kashira, same, and tsuka ito!). But I do like the appeal of the folded blade.
I'd be interested in talking with anyone who has done their own wooden tsuka handles. I really want a good leather to wrap the handle in. I'm not sure what Bugei's doeskin really looks like (they have a great site, but their pics are severely lacking). I'm also interested in talking to someone who has done that about how well they got everything to fit. And if I can do something like just buy a new tsuba for my Raptor (it's wearing way too quickly).
I'm also pondering the Peace Sword from Bugei as the other big purchase. I'd like a nicely done piece, and I at least hope the final quality of that far surpasses that of Hanwei's normal production blades!
Input is most appreciated. I'd like a good source for menuki, fuchi, kashira, and tsubas. I"ve been scouring the web for a while, and there doesn't seem to be one blow-my-mind awesome site ;(
Thanks,
SharpTiger
