Wow, that's pretty rough. Have you sent these pictures to the place you bought it from? I'd try to negotiate a return, that's just nasty. Especially the blade at the habaki...

Very much, complain. My first sword from them had a chip in the blade and a crack in the tsuka. They offered to pay to get it sent back and replaced, and they also checked the replacement for damage before shipping. Hopefully they treat you just as right. Make sure and update.
Also, I love that you live in England and English is your second language.

I thought curved blades over 16" were illegal in the UK?

There was some exception clause thingy once, wasn't there? Something like "hand-made" or being in a martial arts club or some such?
I never really kept up with the details on that one.

The law concerning swords in Britain in a nutshell; Curved blades longer than 50cm are illegal, except blades which have been hand forged. The original sword ban dictated that any of such swords were illegal if they weren't made in Japan. Obviously this law was passed by uneducated bureaucrats and it was rectified later to legalise "hand made" swords made anywhere across the globe. This new and improved "sword ban" (what a stupid thing to call it :? ) allowed citizens to own genuine nihonto and quality reproductions, but not the cheaper end swords which aren't forged and properly hardened. Now some vendors advertise their straight blade "katana" as quality swords because they aren't curved and bypass the law. The people who make these laws know nothing about swords and they were brought about by the media frenzy focussed on young people running around with "samurai swords". Embarassing. Another obvious reaction to this was that the legal, quality forged blades from the likes of DF, Hanwei shot up in price overnight by as much as 20%. What a joke eh? Iaito are legal but you must be a registered martial artist to buy and own one. So get this bombshell. A person who is no longer or never was a registered martial artist cannot own an iaito but can buy a shinken. Stephan, if your blade is not hand forged how did it get into the UK? If it came from overseas did you not have any problem with customs? I had an expensive japanese iaito crushed by customs agents back when I was a kendo student. I'm surprised they didn't threaten you with a court case, which they usually do after illegal property is seized. Alas, the law is the law. Concerning your sword though the best you can do is return to vendor and from what the other's have said you shouldn't have many problems having it replaced. If it's coming from overseas it may not slip through the net this time, squire. Be careful mate.

I often wonder if even customs agents know the import laws. Over here in the ol' US of A one of my other favorite genre of collectibles came under fire, and it's still not clear if the stuff is legal...even though making it illegal is technically illegal... Wow, that's an unusual move. 13 years is a fair amount of time; you're not tired of the place yet? My grandparents are British, came here back in the mid-1950's, and I've been"across the pond" once, myself. As the saying goes, though, "nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there." Come to think of it, it was only a bit more than 13 years ago that I was there... In that case, then, the blade certainly looks salvageable. You seem to have a pretty good idea how to handle it and should be just fine in doing so. Doesn't change the principle of the matter, though. I'm sure SnA can work something out. Keep us updated.

It sounds like a pretty good deal to me, especially if they throw in a stone. However, if the blade edge just needs a little touching up, fine grit sandpaper (400, 800, 1500) and a sanding block might be easier to handle if you don't have a lot of experience with sharpening stones.

I'm sorry to hear about your Yuki man. I've seen and customized at least 2 yukis for SNA but this is the first I've seen that was this bad. Hope the polishing/remounting goes without a hitch! Take care!
