I've been lurking here for a couple of days (just got my account activated, thx!) and after much searching still find a couple of my beginner questions unanswered. I've wanted a functional Japanese-type sword for many years (no SLO, thx) and finally ordered a Cheness Oniyuri which should arrive shortly. I could live with it never leaving the display stand but I would dearly love to be able to someday do basic cutting exercises with it safely. I can pick up a bokken or even the blunted version of the Oniyuri but I live in rural Idaho so no sensei or dojos to turn to that I can find (I doubt my Shotokan katas would be very useful... ) . Can anyone suggest one or more decent beginner's forms/katas books, especially appreciated would be one to take advantage of the Oniyuri's unusual length? Many thanks in advance!... Tomac

Also, maybe check out the first two books listed here. The top one in particular is about tamashigiri(test cutting). I have not read yet myself, but seems a possible resource. www.shinkendo.com/product.html
