it's not traditional in any sense of the word, on any level, as far as i can tell, there isn't even much metal involved, but it would be naturally black, and i would assume it would be able to cut frequently without any trouble www.wtknives.com/warrenthomasswords.html

As far as black metals go, I hink its fair to say that there is not really a "darker" metal to be had. Any steel resultig in a black finish is pretty much surface treated in some way. One thing i wanted to mention as an option, especially if a custom blade is in the works, would be to leave some firescale on the blade after HT. This would be similar to the black finish on my wraith sword from Brenno at Fable Blades. The blade was then chemically blued for a contrasting black/blue black look. The bottom line is, if you're looking for "pure" black, you are really limited to surface coatings that will impart a VERY modern and somewhat cheesy look (IMHO). Cold Bluing, heat bluing and firescale are the only methods i've seen yet that seem appropriate for a functional sword. Scratches can always be touched up, or the blade redone to keep it nice, but i have yet to see any scratches on my dark fable. I've included a link to Brenno's site so you can see the finished look. My cam is down too, otherwise i woud have taken some nice glamour shots for ya. www.fableblades.com/ShadowRazor.html

Baltimore Knife & Sword has already been mentioned and since I'm familiar with their wares I'll use their site for visuals. Example of a blued and heat colored piece. Both of these finishes are surface treatments as noted. I own this blade and have not cut with it because I don't want to chance marring the finishes. It is otherwise a very sharp functional piece. There are many different shades of blue, gray, and black possible with blueing. The link; imakeswords.com/MudDauber.htmThey have several pattern welded blades listed as well. They are not true "damascus" but are high quality and fully functional and offer many patterns to compare. The "color" is through the blades so it can't be scratched off and can be brought back out by acid etching which I have never had to do to any of mine. I own some of the blades listed and have handled many of the rest. The link; imakeswords.com/patternwelded.htmDoes the look of any of these catch your fancy? There are other makers/vendors that offer similiar wares but we cannot speak to their quality and such unless we know them of course. Another example of pattern welding that sold recently on another forum; www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=24632 Beautiful to my eye but this kind of work and skill costs. I almost bought it. Knowing what you can and are willing to spend will help you and us with narrowing down your options. If you don't know this yet, it will come with knowledge and experience as will what you actually like aesthetically.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but this thread is kind of suffering from a bit of necrosis. The original poster didn't even use his account for a week and it's been more than three months since he last logged on (and since the thread had gone dormant).

That's okay.......there's alot of good info being relayed here and it's not dormant if you go by the amount of looks it's gotten. The subject is often wondered about especially by those new to the hobby so here it is.

I've been seriously considering kidnapping this group and having them produce pieces just for me in my secret dungeon forge so you better contact them soon before they can't reply  anyone calls the Feds and I'll just deny everything

i actually own a shinwa, and i don't get why everyone seems to hate them. i have the black zatoichi and from what i can tell, it cuts on the level of the hanwei zatoichi and nobody hates on them. the steel is maybe a little softer, but it is not an issue on light targets, and it is FREAKING BLACK PATTERN WELDED STEEL. it looks so cool in person
