Just a quick one to show why the Jo is king. Just made a few calls. The man with the Jo is Shimizu Takaji , my teacher's teacher's teacher. He passed away in 1978. I don't know how old this is but it sure looks old.

I have yet to find a martial arts person of any type who does not like a good staff

I think it's because, with the Jo and tanjo they can be utilized at both ends very quickly. Quicker than most can draw a sword from its sheath. This makes for a very dynamic weapon when people fall into the misconception that it is only a "stick".
