www.darksword-armory.com/1327-Saber.htmlWas wondering on this how difficult it will be to modify the guard, if needed. I like the bit for the hand, but I have a rather 'large paw' and may need to open it up. I'm ordering it unsharpened, with the interlaced sword belt. This will be my new primary sword for the sparring troupe I'm working at. I know there are a lot of people here very into cutting, but given I live on a third floor apartment, keeping my sparring equipment is enough. And I dont really have a space to cut yet anyway. But I know I've heard good things about DSA and their quality, I just didn't know how easy they would be to mod if need be, and if you guys would know.

Darksword has been known to use pot-metal (cheap zinc alloy) for their fittings before; you can't change those too much without them breaking, as zinc alloy isn't very strong or flexible. It does cast well-- it's often used for game figurines, for example-- but for sword fittings it's really just not ideal.
Now, lately they *have* been making the fittings out of steel, which is definitely better-- stronger and you can tweak it like you're talking about.
Best thing to do is email whomever you buy it from and ask if they know what kind of metal the guard is made of, or contact DSA directly about it and see if they've upgraded it to steel fittings.

Considering this would, if I buy it, see combat in a list (hence unsharpened) i'd rather not have the guard made out of pot metal. There are usually VERY good medics who mysteriously flock near the lists of the sword groups during shows, but I'd rather not have to have them nearby.
I may wait for John at OdinBlades to get his Longship line done. If it turns out, I can get the same style sword, without worry of quality, for just a bit more it appears.

If you're interested, KoA actually has one of these in its 'Scratch and Dent' section for only $200; it's in there cause the scabbard is messed up, the sword itself is fine. Pretty good deal. Could always contact them and check it out.

Not bad.. I'll check on the fittings there then.. Does anyone have any experience with this particular sword or DSA products in general?

No in-hand experience for me, unfortunately, but the gist I've gotten from the board and reviews is that DSA products are generally somewhat heavy (exceptionally so in some cases); barring that they're decent weapons, and they've actually been lightening them considerably lately. The saber in particular looks perfectly fine to me, although IMO John Lundemo's bastard saber would probably end up being a slightly better weapon overall. Honestly, it's pretty much a case of YMMV... some people are happy with theirs 'as is', others like to work on 'em, but I've heard a lot more positive than negative.

Heavy eh? Hmmm.. That'd be an issue.. I talked with Mr. Lundemo, and got a quote, but it's going to have to wait a good while. I was wanting to get something 'cheap' that could take sparring so I could jump in before the rest of this performance season ended, since i'm healed up now. But maybe i'll take the rest of it off and heal up a bit further, strengthen the ankle before stressing it...
I deal with enough weight as is in armor, a too heavy sword is a death knell in the list for me, I need what speed I cna coax out of me.

I guess in general, how does it handle as far as speed and responsiveness? Is it rather slow to turn and move, etc? That's my main concern.

yes it is rather slow has lots of blade presence and when its moving it is fast but the recovery is slow all of this is probably due to the fact that there almost no distal taper. something else to think about is the point is very pointy  if you use this for sparing you will have to round it off a lot
