I just picked a used Windlass Roman Maintz Pattern Gladius (should be spelled Mainz not Maintz) on eBay. I couldn't pass it up, the price was right.
As far as reproduction Mainz Gladii go this one isn't altogether historically accurate.
I don't like the grip and will make one similar to the one used on the Kris Cutlery Gladius.

depending on the price id say you got a good buy i have the pompeii version its very light you can use a dog bone to reshape a new handle its made out of 1065 steel it has a good temper nice cutter its not the most accurate but theres plenty of legion sites that show you how to convert it to more accurate version all in all id say you got a good buy good luck with it

Thanks joeydac. Glad to hear it cuts nicely. Oh I paid $50 US, so I'm happy there.

wow you got it cheap great deal the only complaint would be if you overtighten the pommel you can crack the handle but if you reshape it like a kris cutlery handle you should be ok windlass has iv noticed they like to hollow out there grips mre than they need to but other than that they have a nice tang width and shapen up nicely and hold a nice edge enjoy

The Gladius arrived today. Looks nice. I don't care for the scabbard, rather cheap looking (fake leather and gaudy). That's ok though, didn't really care about the scabbard in the first place. After I clean the sword up i'll post a few pics. Here is a pic of the gladius as received. I went ahead and disassembled the sword. Radiused the tang/blade shoulder junction. Stripped the guard and pommel and gave them a Danish oil finish (first coat, more will be applied later). Re-finished the blade from a mirror polish to a satin polish. Here are some pics: I still have to make a new grip and I'm going to replace the guard plate with a brass plate inset into the bottom of the guard.

You got a good deal, Blade. I also got my Windlass mainz off of ebay tho not as cheap as you got yours for. How does it disassemble? Screw off pommel?

It uses a pommel nut. Once you remove the brass nut on the top, the pommel slides off.

Got the new grip made today. Made from some hardwood (forget what type) I had laying around. It is round in cross section shape near the pommel, then becomes a flattened oval at the guard. I don't know why the bottom of the grip looks redish in color. It doesn't look like that except in the pic. Must have been the lighting. Here is a pic:

I like the grip, Blade. Much better than the plastic one.

Thanks for the compliments guys.
I really like the way the grip feels. Comfortable and is easy to maintain the blade alignment now.
Next I 'm going to make a brass guard plate and set it into the base of the wood guard.

That looked pretty awesome so far. Have you done the guard plate yet?

Nice work and nice find.
One of these days I'm going to have to take the plunge on a gladius. I've always liked them, though I'm not sure why. Maybe out of respect for what the legions accomplished with them.
Anyhow, great work!

Thanks shobushi. Yeah before I found this one I always wanted a Gladius for that exact reason.

As a classical history major and general roman/grecian nut, I like it!

Thanks jhart06.
Now I'd like to find a (cheap) Pompeii Gladius or a Spatha and modify it the same way I did this.
