Well as you all know, sephiroth from the 7th installment of the Final Fantasy series uses a ridiculous sized katana. It's either an odachi/nodachi o-katana, not sure which. Well I've been trying to find a 37 inch + bare blade to mount and be a sephiroth look a like. Anyone know a decent katana with a not too long tsuka (under 15 inches) and a blade of this specification for around 300? I dont care if its DH or not, as long as it has a hamon, real of fake.

i have a 36 inch ryansword nodachi that i made into sephiroths sword. cut the tuska back. (the tang is 10 inches long the tsuka was 16) i gave it an 11 inch tsuka with leather wrap and black rayskin and i fabricated a guard shaped like his. i got the sword for 85$ and honestly bang for your buck wise its a great sword. it is what it is. but its a solid cutter, ive hit the stand many times and its never rolled or anything.

My first thought when reading the topic title was, "Don't worry, you'll grow out of it," but that was quickly followed by remembering having seen DOZENS of Sephiroth replicas, and multiple odachi etc., many of which quite well made. Unfortunately...I can't seem to find them now. :?

the replicas are all non functional SLO's though some are well done. i looked over thousands of them in my quest to find one. i love mine now and its totally customized. I generally wouldnt reccomend ryan swords cuz their semprini is overpriced chinatana's but the 36 Inch Nodachi is alot of bang for your buck. www.ryansword.com/full-tang-blad ... -p-67.html

I remember one being made by Musashi or Masahiro that was on par with their other offerings. Some other miscellaneous offerings have come up and been reviewed favorably. Certainly not SLOs by any means, though those are rampant as well.
I wish I could remember where I'd seen them, though...
Speaking of SLOs, RyanSword... :x
Can't win, eh? Hauwei or Sino or some such might be able to whip something up for a good price, though.

Step away from production blades like Musashi etc etc Most are definetely wall hangers You can go to Huawei on ebay but there's been bad reviews lately.. But I did send some specs to them and they said they can do it for $298 51 inch blade with a 15 inch handle Clay tempered and etc etc Try to build a friendship between Jacky on Huawei and yourself. Usually that gives you great communication and some trust. But be FIRM in what you want OK. Ask them lots of questions if needed. Have fun

Good job, mikejapan, really nice. Now every body just has to have a Sephiroth sword.

I dont really care about it looking like the sword he used, like tsuba wise and stuff, I just want a long katana that doesent have a stupid long tsuka. I'd probably just mount it in whatever fittings I feel like.

Buy Hanwei Odachi. Cut tang down and mount shorter grip and fittings. Boom! Now all you need is a sissy-girl white wig...

lol yeah I think ive got a wig laying around.... I think his hairs kinda cool personally, if I could rock it I so would, especially if i was an insane genetically engineered super human bent on the idea of melding with the planet. But I'm not so I'd prolly just look really odd.
How would one even shorten a tang?

Choice of hacksaw, chisel, or file.
Though the Hanwei easily exceeds your budget of $300...

I thought that said "rifle" at first. I was like "you can shorten a tang with a rifle? That sounds like fun!"

You can also use an angle grinder with a cutting wheel or a dremel( if you're patient).

Well, in theory where there's a will...
Or you can do this.

kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=CS88BOK If you want a sword that has those specs and can really cut the cold steel okatana would be good and its about 300 on KOA and you could remount whatever fittings and tsuba you want.

If you gonna remove quite a bit of the tang definatley use grinder, take to long otherwise using a file, out of interest a chisel? ![???](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) um what kind and how would that work. Same principle as that whole sharpening with sandpaper thing do you want it to take a year or an hour?

I don't want to derail this thread any, but has anyone else ever wondered what would result from cutting the Hanwei Odachi's tang to, say, a little more than half its original length and then slapping a heavy ass pommel on in the shape of a tsuka so that the total grip area was around 11-12"? Maybe I'm just weird, but I can't help but wonder how far that'd bring back the POB.

The Hanwei Odachi has a 49 inch clay tempered blade with high sori. Unless your strong and have good technique you CAN handle a 10-11 inch tsuka but not recommended. Might as well leave it or cut down the tsuka length. The Tang I don't know. The official length of the Masamune used by Sephiroth is 7 1/2 feet long. And Sephiroth is 6'1 So the tsuka is probably around 12-15 inches roughly guessing. And maybe the blade is 5.5 to 6 feet in length Yeah... LOOONG sword.
