Cursed or haunted sword?
Man, I've never heard of that before- strange indeed. I wonder just what kind of metal the basket is made from.

This might sound like a dumb question, but you are making sure to oil it after you sand it down right?
Reading your description, you had mentioned sanding at the end... which if you do that, then you are exposing the steel to the elements.

I have a couple that do that on the pommel and guard out of my entire collection. All of them get the same maintenance so I am guessing it is just the quality of metal used for the fittings.

I know that steel or iron will corrode faster in areas where the metal is stressed.

hi guys thanks for the help guys, greg my appollogise for not explaing things better but yes it allways gets oiled up after working on it in fact no matter were on the sword i work on the whole sword gets cleaned after working on it then all the steel gets reoiled . heres some pics of the problem child just as a point of interest its mostly the inside of the guard that sufferes with this problem last pic is of the inside of the guard after cleaning rubbing down with 2000 grit wet and dry then reoiling mind you supprisingly for a sword of this price range it dose look like poor quality steel used for this guard still i cant really grumble as i did get a very healthy price reduction with it and in spite of the problems i really do like this sword i have to clean the basket in situ so to speak as its so well put together i cant undo the nut on the end of the egg shaped pommel so i wont take the risk of damaging the nut or threads. thanks for the advice and patience guys mick
