Hello all! New here to the SBG, but by no means new to swords. I've worked Ren Faires for years, and had the opportunity to watch a few blacksmiths at work, and help sell blades for Legacy Forge a few times. I've also, due to one of my best friends, gotten to know the Hibben family and see first hand Daryl and Gil's work thanks to him, so I know quite a bit on the makers side. I've never been much for fighting due to repeatedly breaking my left foot and nearly severing the Achilles tendon. But, due to a new treatment/injection i;ve received from my doctor, I am now able to run, and fight, again.
So, that out of the way, i've begun to work on re-acquiring weaponry suitable for sparring and using. Most of what I have or want to have is not edged, due to using them against other people. I am in talks with J from OdinBlades on a custom warder (being a WoT fan, I cant NOT own something that gorgeous!!).
I am looking principally to make a good pair of axe's and a hammer.
I'm looking for more of the Wulflund style hammer(I want that some day, but I dont have the cash for it), and have heard it recommended to buy on from the Japanese Woodworking site. Is there a particular model that is best? I'm a pretty stout guy, broad at the shoulders, so I tend to get complimenting weapons. I think the 135mm was recommended, and to heat and add banding of some kind of metal (what kind was left unsaid) around the head and do a leather wrapping for the handles. Will that particular hammer hold up well for light sparring against mostly unarmored (chain and leather is the 'heavy armor' in our group) type opponents?
I am also looking to make a pair of single handed axes, in a bearded/headsman style I have seen from one of the fighters I know.
Very similar to this, but with the top being flat, without the 'top spike'.. Is this something I'll have to get custom made, or is there similar on the open market? And as far as hafts for these... I've seen on here certain dowel rods mentioned as well as tool handles. What's a good length for an axe like that, to keep it one handed but not too short?
I hope i'm not too wordy, and look forward to getting to know this community! There are TONS of talented artisans and lovely collections and people on here!
Secondly
