Hello all. Hopefully this is not a stupid question: Last night (middle of night) ,something happened that scared the cr*p out of me : I had slept on my stomach, and woke with a terrible jaw ache. It hurt sooo bad , I couldn't go back to sleep for a while. It hit me, "Tetanus" and I was wondering about "Lock-jaw". It's been some years since I've had a "Tetanus shot" and I've been working with tons (literally) of rusty steel and steel lately. Just wondering if anyone knows what is the actual risk of this stuff happening? Luckily my jaw stopped hurting, and it was just a funny way I slept, but Is it wise to get a shot working with all this steel? Or uncommon. Thanks, I'll check back when I can.

If you're not current on your tetanus shot, you should really get one. Its not worth the risk of getting it. I'm actually glad you posted this as I am about due to get one and might have forgotten.

Don't take the chance. With your seriously increased chance you are exactly the guy who needs to be up to date with the med

Yeah, get it, just be ready for a few days where you may feel like you have a mild flu. That's what my experience was the last time. I had to get one because I stepped on a sewing pin (thanks ex-wife) and it started getting red and sore around the wound a few hours later... but I just happened to catch it in time, better to be prepared.

Taken from www.health.state.ny.us/diseases/communicable/tetanus/fact_sheet.htmLockjaw is nothing to fool around with. Did you see that last line? If you get it, there ain't semprini they can do for you. Most folks have never seen a case of lockjaw; I have (I'm an old guy). It ain't pretty. Haul your butt to the Doctor and get a vaccination NOW, you're shooting craps with your life here.

Thanks a bunch fellas. Hate to bump this back up again, but I'm on my way home from getting the shot. I feel stupid since he told me it lasts 10 years IF one has had three in their lifetime. 5 years otherwise. Doc chuckled when I told him my jaw story since one would have severe muscle spasms, etc. first. Well better safe than sorry and no more worries now too. I had a splinter looking thing in one fingernail ...three X-rays...nope wasn't metal...Doc was happy probably ...Ching!Ching! I have medical though anyway luckily. I had a new baby girl born the other day too makes me worry more about health stuff. It's odd all the metal work jobs , none have asked about shots. Gotta go I'll add karma to you all soon.

Don't lose sleep over it, just get it at your next annual checkup, etc.. Not a huge risk for you, but freak accidents with rusty steel can happen and if by some itty, bitty, teeny-weeny chance you do get tetanus from it, well, then your family may be going coffin shopping - it's not always fatal, but you may wish it was if you got it!

Tetanus is one of those weird things. It's really not a difficult thing to do to go in and get a shot done and you're covered for years. But yeah, as others have already mentioned, if you're working around steel all the time, and that one time you get pricked by something, you may not even notice and get tetanus. It can be a big deal if you don't get the shot taken care of or are up to date on it. Doc at my local ER told my girlfriend all of this when she went in recently for a cut on her hand from a very non-rusted knife. Luckily she had just gotten one like 3 years ago.
