Hey there SBG. I'm usually not a Chinese sword kinda guy but I figure its time to expand my collection (after seeing a cool music video) I figured I would get a Chinese sword, after looking around i found one that i really liked (looks wise) yet i'm not too sure how legit it is, just want to know if anyone has any additional info or comments they can give me on it, take me in the right direction with my first ever step into Chinese swords. Thanks. www.swordsofmight.com/hand-forge ... sword.aspx

It's really hard to tell the quality of these Han Jian's just from online pics because there are sooo many that have these same style fitings. I don't mean similar looking ones- I mean these exact ones. I have one just like this except mine also has a throat guard. I too really like the look of these (hence why I have one) and in trying to figure out who made mine I have seen tons of similar swords sold all over the place. The originals for these common castings must be based on somethng historical, or all the forges in Longquan must have passed them around to each other over the years The key to figuring out the quality lies in the blade used and typically damascus means more money but often it doesn't mean better quality. Many makers churn out a cheaply made version of damascus. So you should try to find out which forge your choice came from to get a better idae about the blade. Maybe ask the seller what the fittings are made from as this will give you a good clue about the quality overall. Mine are plain zinc alloy painted brass coloured- not so great (but I'm improving these looks as I write). You can also check if the seller is willing have them dissasemble one and tell you (or show you) how the tang is held in place- another great way to ifgure out the quality. Generally speaking $200 for a damascus sword is a good deal but I wory about the store you've linked to. I've heard mixed reviews about their products- maybe ask more about them. If you want to, check this thread on the inside of my jian- viewtopic.php?f=35&t=5730&start=0Also by next week I'll have the customizing done on this sword so I have lots more pictures of mine right now if you want to see more about it.

So for a sword like that, it's most probably mass produced in some anonymous chinese forge. Since it's 200 dollars, I'd say pay that extra 100 dollars and get it made by Zheng Wu or Jin-Shi. Don't blow 200 dollars on a potentially sempriniesque sword.

Good advice if you can spare the extra cash. If I did alright with my purchase but had the advantage of buying it through our classifieds therefore had a chance to ask a lot of questions first.

Not sure if your specific to the Han Dynasty style of Jian but thought I would mention the Scott Rodell cutting Jian $279.99 at www.sevenstarstrading.com/html/hanwei/cuttingjian.htmlIf your really preferring the Han Dynasty though I suggest you go with Jin Shi, as most Han Dynasty jian out there are not fully functional, but Jin Shi's definitely is. wonderful video review of the Jin Shi Han Jian by SwordSage

Well, calculated my funding and worked out a saving plan, sent an Email over to Jin Shi. going to do what i can to get my first ever chinese sword ! Hopefully i didnt seem like too much of a noob in my email.
In a swoop of interesting karma, a friend of mine gave me what looks like a wooden jian (a sign maybe?) as a gift today. guess i'll have something to train with during the long waiting period lol.
