Just got My first katana. A kaze ko from cheness. After reading so much about quality control issues, I was a bit suprised to recieve a very well constructed sword. the thing is solid as a rock, no looseness no blemishes. There were , however, two 'defects'. The saya has a crack in the paint. Im not sure that it extends through the wood, but I think it does. Also, the kisaki was pretty rough. The shape seemed good, so I decided(with a lot of help from you folks...thank you all)to try to polish it. Started with 320 and worked up to 2000 grit. Thats as fine a grit as I could anyone around here to get for me. Turned out really nicely. But, of course, I wasn't satisfied with the level of polish, so I took a chance and bought one of those little ten dollar kits for polishing the plastic outer lenses on cars. Worked beautifully on the tip, although masking it was tricky. I haven't yet worked up the courage to try it on the rest of the blade. I'm wondering if any of you have used this method or if maybe I'm doing something that I'll be sorry for? Thanks Again

Nice to see another person who received a good product from Cheness. I have a Kaze katana and it is also very solid. I think that a rough kissaki is par for course with Cheness, though. I also went up to 2000 grit redoing mine.

I see a reply from zentessuken. If your asking for a "full review' from me on this katana, please understand that my knowledge of japanese sword construction is beginer level. I would be honored to give it my best, if you folks could steer me towords the details and specific info that are important. I've read a lot of reviews and could mimic them, but a broader idea of what matters would be really useful to me and would make for a more real review. Thanks

No idea on the kits being used for the rest of the kat. I thought even Cheness put out mirror polishes on the blades. There may be loss of the hamon if it was even visible in the first place - but you can always go back and etch it back out. Mother's Mag, Flitz, Nevrdull will help the mirror polish get even better. Mother's Mag will remove/dim down a hamon but Nevrdull cannot/won't (safe to use). Perhaps you can give your kit a trial run in the polished region right under the habaki; nobody's gonna be able to see a roughened spot there

You're absolutly right. The polish on the body of the blade is already very nice, and the hamon is really striking. No point in screwing it up on some quest for ultimate shine.

*Definitely* contact Cheness to see about a replacement saya if you haven't done so already.
. . . and if you do, please tell us how it goes? Cheness' reputation on this board is kinda shoddy, to say the least, so any experiences you have with the brand are worth notice.

i just bought a kaze as well and am hand pollishing it now.. i have a question when i look along the blade so thats its flat, horizontal and hold it at eye level i see bumps along the mine not so much the whole blade, is this normal i mean the blade is strait and sharp?
