Sorry if this has been dealt with before but I don't see it specifically discussed anywhere here. I was wondering if stainless is OK for axe heads? I assume it would be no good for a long handle, for the same reason it's no good for a functional sword. Since axe heads aren't subject to the same flexing stresses I would think it would be OK unless you go chopping steel or rock with it!

Stainless steel is not good for anything unless it is the right type or it is treated properly, always go for high carbon steel or tool steel.

I thought the general wisdom was that stainless is fine for shorter (less than 12") blades? Like for knives. An axe has a VERY short blade! Anyway, the one I'm getting says "tempered 420".

I don't see any reason why stainless would be BAD as an axe, though in all honestly, the only stainless axes I've seen are wallhangers.
I'd have to see the axe you're referring to. Generally, quality axes are indeed made of high-carbon steel alloys as oppose to any stainless series. Part of the reason being is that axe-heads are generally thick enough that the rusting would have to be EXTREME(like, left outside for over a decade) before it seriously effects the axe's capability. War axes tend to have a different profile, with a thinner plane, but even those would last fine for quite awhile.
Even if covered in rust, all the head would need is sharpening(possibly rehafting) to be serviceable.

Yeah, if it's a serious axe I could't see it being a problem. However if its a real flashy obvious fantasy wallhanger thing then I'm sure we all know the score.
Show us this axe of yours.

alot of camp and belt axes are made of stainless, both domestic and imported, (if you see something listed as swedish steel its SS) heavy duty wood choppers no but for light duty axes SS is fine.

Heh. Don't have it yet but here's a pic from eBlades where I'm getting it. It's 15 inches long so more of a Tomahawk actually. It's black because of some kind of powdercoating and a black handle wrap. ![](http://a247.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/58/m_9ca98355e4cbdd0cad28cfd93df52b6e.jpg)

Its a piece of garbage. Way to thin for SS to be servicable, and the whole thing is SS not just the head, so yeah... Garbage. Its the equivalent of one of those cheesy ninja tactical swords but in axe form. BAD BAD BAD

Its basicaslly a blade cut from flat steel hey, so it's not really an axe as much as a blade. The SS handle may be a week point. Still it might be fun for a thrower or light duty. I wouldn't want to come against it in a fight.

Well, I doubt I'll be using it to chop any trees down. ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) More of a wall hanger type then I guess. Does look cool anyway. It's cheap enough so that I don't feel to bad about wasting money on it.
