A good alternative would be to learn to throw rocks, coins, small object, etc... really accurately and with a lot of force. Another skill that is useful is learning to use a slingshot. None of these are relevant to edged tools so please pardon the digression.

Is it because the tool is supposed to stick in an object? Is it because it might bend, warp, or rust? Is it because it is not sharp enough or too dull? What is "junk" versus "good steel"?

most stars on the market are just crap granted they may be 440 or "surgical" steel but they are mostly dull and bevelled in such a way it is near imposeable to sharpen or so soft they are distroyed on impact with any thing like wood most cost between 5-8 bucks and aren't worth half of that

Look for carbon steel. And by Naruto, do you mean the Stars? (Shuriken) Or knives? (Kunai)

Just remember traditionally speaking shuriken ( throwing stars also known as hara shuriken as well as spikes BO shuriken) were used as a distraction tactic in concert with the sword. slavia is right cheap is better in this case. they are basically disposable and were made from other tools ( gardening or carpentry). also they were not lethal in general unless poison was applied to the tips( which was just as often lethal to the person using the shuriken if they cut themselves with it in the process of digging it out of their clothing to use. i hope this helps ![:)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I trained with a styro-foam cut out dummy and can stick a star in a really nasty place not necessarily lethal (try to avoid deadly force) oh and me and my friends used stars for darts for fun and trained that way

Check 'em out, brand new(Literally, just on the market). www.coldsteel.com/80ts.htmlI know, these are probably not in your price range, but still, it is a shuriken and it will be strong. I know, coldsteel has a lot of hype about there blades, but I have one of there knives, it is great. You can tust the steel on this thing.

It is good to face challenges in life, and overcome them. this can be a great source of self confidence, and personal pride. hint: if you learn to make you're own shuriken both hara and bo shuriken you will always have the means of making a weapon with which to defend you're self. also really cool bragging rights can be had with you're Friends when they see you using a weapon that you made you're self ![;)](//storage.forums.net/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
