DRM,
How heavy do you speculate this thing will be?

total weight of the piece or the draw weight? the draw is 130lbs not sure what the heft of the whole thing will be. i don't really think i will be shooting it all that often. I want to make it so that it is totally functional and then knock off some rounds. I guess to add to the collection. I looked around and really couldn't find one made that was the way i wanted it. so here i am trying to give it a shot myself. i don't think it will be highly decorative or anything but if it is built like an old one it will be alright with me . I wish i could have done it without the stock being in two parts but, i couldn't figure it any other way. Maybe if i was way more familiar on how they worked but even then it would be tough.

I would watch those. The ones with the metal type frame and wood forearm and stock? Post me a pic. I have heard of those snapping on dudes before. Most cocking devices are generic, like a rope device with a wrist wrap, so you are really not aiding in getting back the 150 lb draw, as much as you are taking the pressure off of your fingers. If you are in so-so shape, I would buy one first, then try and cock it yourself. If you can't comfortably do it, then get the rope device. I can get mine back with really no effort, but I have a friend of same size/stature, and he cant budge it. There is a technique to it. Check it. www.barnettcrossbows.comThese are hands down the best value out there. Quality made, lifetime guarantee, boasting speeds that are usually found on 500-600 dollar crossbows. They are the Cheness of the crossbow world. FOR THE MONEY, you cannot get better performance. Other names to google--Fred Bear, Tenpoint, Excalibur. If I had any other, it would be excalibur. The recurve design is much easier(and cheaper) to change strings on. I think Barnetts recurve is called the Panzer. Shoot me a PM I will help you look. The 80 dollar jobs can usually be had cheaper, if it is the same kind I'm thinkin of.

Kinda freaky. I was just checking online prices for the Barnett Panzer V earlier today, and then I come here and see this (coincidence?). Anyhoo, if you're not looking for traditional materials, Barnett seems the way to go for me too, given their reputation for quality and reasonable prices. Lucky for me, the cheapest model (Panzer) is also the model I happen to be interested in, as it's their only current recurve. I just can't get into compound bows. THe Panzer ranges from $110-150 online, though quivers, optics, etc. are extra. Not bad for 150# draw and 245 fps (I get about 170 fps with my 48# longbow, for comparison). www.barnettcrossbows.com/recurvecrossbows/panzer_v.asp

Yeah,
I am trying to make a jack to change strings. That is the downside. I have the revolution, and also got a Quad 400 that I never opened. It is FAST. 350 fps fast, and they advertise this with competors arrows.
Downside is, they generate this speed with a longer power stroke. So you have to buy 22 inch bolts. Those get expensive. I can get 4-5 inch groups out of it at about 65-70 yards though. And still gets decent penetration with a broadhead.

yeoldearcheryshoppe.com/Check this guy out. Nice old Christian fellow, honest and good to deal with. Not bad starting prices on Panzer's. If one of you end up getting one, please keep me posted.

drmabuse. That's beautiful work so far. I may have missed it in your earlier posts, but did you buy a kit? If so, does the company have a website? Please continue posting photos of your work. Thanks.

Thanks. thank you. my first time with something like this so i am learning about it all as i go. It wasn't a kit exactly. I found a site that sells parts and bought them there. It is almost all of the parts you need. The ones that they don't have you can fabricate with a little bit of work. The parts are rough cut out of steel so you will have to do all of the finishing on them. I can't say how good they are since i am new at this and haven't shot a single bolt yet. I will keep putting pictures up as i go to show how it went down. I viewed a few old crossbow styles and made a hard copy then did a little math to figure out the stock. here is the site that i bought the parts from: www.alcheminc.com/crossbow.html they took quite a long time to be sent and i am still waiting for a part so don't expect quick turn over. Any tips on how to get my string on this beast would be great. I have little practical knowlage with crossbows other than what i have read so far.

any updates?!?!?!
I made a medieval crossbow before, but my prod snapped in half when I used it in the cold weather... Now I'm wanting another one to try to hunt with. How did it work out?
