What Would You Do With This Sword?

Now, for the following keep in mind that I don't know anything about swords so please correct me if any of the assumptions I make are wrong:
I won an old NCO officer's sword from Goodwill in an auction for about $60. I don't think that it's valuable at all, though I'll make damn sure before I do anything with it. I'd say that it's probably around 50 to 100 years old if it's authentic. There's some etching on the blade but no distinctive US military emblems, so it's probably either a replica or from another country. It has the same basic design this sword, though it's more intricate and decorated. The etching pictures what looks like a drum, a trumpet, and a crown. I have no idea what those symbols could mean. There is no writing of any sort and nothing that looks like a brand or makers mark.
However, it looks like it's an antique and it's obviously well made. It's sturdy; the handle is real brass wrapped with cord, and the blade is real steel. Seriously, it's not a cheap piece of crap even if it's not that valuable. I can swing it around and such without feeling any sort of rattling.
So my question is: is this sword actually useful for anything, and should I sharpen it? I ask about the sharpening because it's a dress sword and the edges are squared off. It looks like I wouldn't be able to sharpen it near the base without ruining the etching. As for "useful for anything" I'd like to have some safe fun cutting boards and boxes in my backyard and I'd like to think that I could use it to fight with if I really wanted to. I don't have any good pictures of it but I'll try to take some soon if there's a chance that it could actually be something unique.
