Glad you like it! I once had an antique kandha, which had frabic on the inside of the grip to cushion the pommel against your hand.

I've noticed that the new cold steel sabers have more distal taper than the old ones.

This (above) really put a smile on my face - thank you! While there is not a single decent Cossack shashka (I am not talking about various quality reproductions of the 1881/1927 Russian army standard issue shashkas) on the market outside Russia - why not to grab a decent quality tulwar?! This, actually, brings me to the next issue. Similar to shashka, tulwar is apparently coming in two categories: heavy (similar to the mentioned above 1881/1927 Russian army standard issue shashkas) and light - just about 500 g (similar to the Circassian and early Cossack shashkas of KKV, TKV, Nizhegorodka, etc.). Now, while heavy ("usual"?) tulwars are often reproduced by many makers and can be seen on eBay, I came across only a few videos where the light version was mentioned only briefly. If any of the respected forumites have any knowledge about this light tulwar, I will be very honored to learn...

Lightweight tulwars are out there. I haven't seen any repros, just antiques. I haven't seen any as light as 500g myself, but I know they did get that light. At 650g and lighter, they handle quite differently to heavier (say, 750g and up) tulwars. Very fast and agile. The main disadvantage is that the blades are more fragile. It probably takes more skill to cut effectively with them. To quote myself: "Cutting through clothing, pushing through blocks, blocking blows more easily, better cutting with poor technique - all potential benefits of extra weight. Skill will work better. Lightweight is good, as long as the weapon doesn't become too fragile. Light is fast, speed is life." Some discussion: www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=17903

Timo, thank you. This is pretty much what the guy on the video said: "The lighter version requires better skills". I guess in this regard tulwar can be compared to shashka
