Hey y'all, I just thought I would remind you ancient and traditional archery fans that the 3rd Annual Howard Hill S.E. Classic Trad Archery Tournement is the Weekend of June 2 and 3rd at Tannehill State Park, Alabama (near Bessemer). FB

That ought to be a blast. I sure wish I could be there. Howard is one of my all time heroes, so I'm glad there are still people keeping his memory alive like this. I wonder if Craig and Evie Ekin (current owners of Howard Hill Archery up in Montana) will be there? Craig's made two bows for me, and I've talked to him on the phone a few times, but it would be a real pleasure to meet him in the flesh and hear some first hand accounts of shooting with Howard.

Hey Kriegschwert, I did not make it to the tournement after all. Go to bellsouthpwp.net/k/d/kd4rfa/terry/hhse1.htm to view the event's home page. I think a Howard Hill bow was auctioned off. But anyway, I wanted to go, took this weekend off to go and all. But my brother, who recently retired from the AF came home to visit. It has been a couple of years sine I saw him so I decided to cancel my plans to attend the tournement and knock around with him. We had a good time though. We are both history buffs so we went to the National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus, Ga.. That is a neat museum and while there they fired an original Confederate 7" "Brooke Rifle". The cannon was mounted on a pivit mount overlooking the Chattahoochie River. Awesome!! It was like a bolt of lighting struck near us. From 100 yds away I felt the concussion shake my t-shirt. Awesome!! I don't know if you are into the CW or not, but I am and also into the CW naval aspect of the war. I have studied Ironclads, their layouts, etc.. I can only imagine the pandamonium of sound when enclosed within the armored casemate while those things were being worked and fired. In the Battle of Mobile Bay the CSS Tennessee had two 7" Brooke Rifles fore and aft and four 6.4" Brooke Rilfles in broadside, two on each side. Dang! I can imagine the racket while that poor ironclad fought most of the federal fleet almost single handedly. It surrendered only after its rudder chains were shot away and it was lying helpless in the water, and after the federal ships had surrounded it and just pounded it with everythign from 9" smoothbores to the huge 15" cannon aboard the updated Monitor class Union Ironclads. When one of those 15" monsters breached the casemate broadside, the commander figured it was time to surrender. So helpless and unable to manouver, and to protect his men from further waste and loss of life, he surrendered. I have often wondered what sort of damage the dear ol' CSS Tennessee would have done had her rudder chains not been shot away. Anyway, I have drifted way off topic as usual. Take care, FB

Hey Dishdoc, The museum was there before, but housed in a simple structure with the hulls to the ships in an open air hanger type structure. A few years ago that big new modern building was constructed and now everything is inside and in a controlled atmosphere, etc.. I hope you can make it to it sometime. It is a nice musuem, with a great book selection in their gift store. The museum honores both Union and Confederate history, ships, men, etc..
By the way, you said you passed by it on the way home, so that puts you possibly travelling in my direction (near Montgomery, Al.). Where do you live, if you don't mind me asking? Take care, Freebooter

Take care, Freebooter Sneads, Florida. South east of Dothan. Lake Seminole. It's know as Three rivers. The Chattahoochee and Flint come together to form Lake Seminole, which flows out to become the Appalachicola river. It's very pretty country here. I was born in Ozark, Al. We are not to far apart. I plan on trying to make the Howard Hill event next year.
