Though I prefer a checkered backstrap and smooth sides on a 1911 for draw speed, it looks cool. I've messed with 1911 grips a lot, but never rayskin - bet it grips like a mofo! If you do another, you may also try sourcing slim grips first so the total thickness end up where you want it. Also, it may be cool to do a set where the rayskin is an inlaid panel into wood.
Was it tricky getting it molded around the contours, especially cutout for the the hammer spring pin?

I had to sand the notch for the mag release pretty much all the way down to wood, but the skin just conformed to the notch for the mainspring housing pin on its own...we over-wrapped it very tightly while it dried. Next time, we'll use thinner grips or just sand the backs down to an appropriate thickness.

Certainly looks good, I wonder how it would feel after a day of shooting... Is it a rough finish, or did it come out softish? (The usual dry stuff found on most swords, or the lovely soft stuff used in clothing and accessories, like my wallet?)
