Anyone know of a better set than this? I want something simple and not too bulky/long, but to be honest this set is just really cheap and crappy I like the looks, just want better quality... budk.com/Swords/United-Black-Ninja-Swordthanks

You're right - cheap and crappy.. I have one, got it at a gun show for $10 as something to play with, it's just a machine ground piece of bar stock. No idea what your budget is or anything, but there's some better ones out there - www.kultofathena.com/japanese.asp - scroll down to the ninja swords section.

Barry Dawson of Dawson Knives makes swords that are very much like what you're looking at, but they're probably way out of your price range. Also, while they're still relatively expensive and a little further from what you want, there's the ATrim Tac Kat II and the ATrim Little Tigress, both sold through Tried & True Armory.

Wow, yeah I think I'm in love... a little pricy for the simplicity of it, but I'm then assuming that it's a quality blade. I can't stop looking at the Little Tigriss.
Is there a way these swords could be carried on the back, or are they too long? That's what I had in mind when posting this thread...

Not so long as you carry them correctly. One of the major mistakes people make with back carry is to have the mouth of the scabbard right on their shoulder. With anything more than 20", this makes it very hard to draw in any sort of a hurry. Slide it down a few inches so it's more towards the middle of your shoulder blades and you're good; it's just resheathing you've got to worry about.
As for blade quality, ATrims are among the best money can buy and I can think of half a dozen people who just might swear to that statement (I'm not one of them since I haven't had the pleasure of owning one, but I'm working toward it).

Awesome! You don't think the curve of the blade would cause any problems drawing from the back?

Not at all. In fact, it makes it easier since you can draw it more out to the side without completely ruining the edge, which means you can get it out faster. I've found, in tests, that drawing a curved sword from the back is easier than drawing a straight sword of a similar length is difficult if not near impossible with a lot of twisting. However, if you want to make it real easy no matter what sword you're wearing, get a soft leather sheath made like a lot of knife sheaths, where one side extends much further than the other with the mouth of the sheath positioned so that it's in the middle of your back, regardless of how much blade it leaves exposed. It makes drawing from the back super quick.
If you do that, however, just remember to get a thumb break to lock the hilt against your back as well as hold the sword in. I've got the Tac Kat II I posted above on my wishlist and that's what I'll most likely be doing, though I'd also recommend having the sheath set up so you can position the straps in any number of ways for different methods of carry, since you may want to wear it on your hip one day, your back the next, or something similar. Also, an idea to consider about the back sheath: you can also wear it so the hilt sticks out near your hip; it's actually a much easier draw than from your shoulder and much more discreet since you don't have to reach up for it.

Sticking out near the hip while on my back, that would mean the sword is upside-down, is that practical? Or will the thumb break solve the problem?
Also, I don't see anything about a saya on the ATrim website, whatcha think?

The thumb break will solve it so long as it's done properly; the point of a thumb break is to keep the blade in the sheath.
ATrims generally don't come with scabbards, so it's a bit of an extra cost, but member SlayerofDarkness works with leather and could most likely make you a simple soft leather scabbard for your blade.

Here is his profile; just click "send private message" and let him know what you'd like and I'm sure you two can work something out. However, I'm not 100% sure he still does leatherwork, so best to ask that first with an outline of what you're after and if not, just post what you're after in the Sword Customization section and someone will likely find it who knows everyone who works with leather here better than I.

Would it be too sick of an idea if I could get something like the tactical baldric in the other thread, and the back scabbard I want for the ATrim, and have them both together as one set? Like if it was all leather, but functional like the nylon (?) baldric, and then connected to the back scabbard ...just dreaming...

It's entirely possible; frankly, you can choose whatever style scabbard suits you best. I'm just planning on a soft leather one for myself to really fit the "tactical" angle of the sword.

Definitely soft leather seems to be the way to go (light and flexible). I sent SlayerofDarkness a message, I'll let you know if he's still doing leather work once he gets back to me.

Yeah, this sounds like a very cool plan. A bit 'fantastical', but that's where the fun is, right? Doing something a bit new and different, but still practical and realistic. Besides, working with a Tigress would just be FUN. I'm sure Newbie will keep this thread up-to-date, but I'm in if he is! Sounds fun to me... -Slayer

Of course that's where the fun is. Besides, it's all preparation for the coming zombie apocalypse.
