So I think that my first purchase, even before a sword, will be the Butterfly Blades from Paul Chen Hanwei, with the scroll engravings. I have heard that the lower end Chen blades being hit and miss, but I 'm not trained in the proper use of them anyway. Does anyone know if they are tempered? I only have seen the High Grade Steel as a descriptor, and what of the guards? I'm tempted to buy the Rattan version for the Brass guards, even though they are less attractive (and scary). Any past reviews I missed?

I think anything from Chen is going to be tempered. The occassional problems with Chen blades seem to be mainly with their western swords, though I guess there's been one or two problems with their PPK in the past (I seem to remember reading something to that effect, but don't hold me to it ). I have a Chen Dadao and the heat treat all around is phenomenal. Tempering isn't going to be a real problem on blades as short as butterflies anyway. Even if the hardening and tempering processes are only barely adequately done, blades that short aren't subject to the same kind of radical flexing and twisting that occur with longer sword blades. Nope, no reviews of them yet, as far as I know. You're referring to these guys, right? www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=2067GTDefinitely hardened and tempered carbon steel blades, and the guards are probably cast mild steel (as almost all sword hilt components are).

Thanks Kriegschwert! The link you gave had a better description than the one I saw, although I've seen some better prices... Makes sense about the shorter blade not needing to be as tough; now I'm thinking about the rest of the Chinese made ones for under $50! -Not really -
I think these will be a nice start to a collection, especially since the price is relatively low, and the wife won't freak. -Too bad!

That's alright your newbieness is probably just the same as mine mate and regardless of newbieness this hobby is about learning and if we dont try we dont learn I also think that these swords are very beautiful with all the scrollwork and whatnot on them and very well priced. Are you buying them new?

Yeah, I'm gonna hafta buy online from the US from the looks of things. That should about double the price. I went to the only martial arts supply in town, and they only had stainless training ones that are HUGE! I'm still searching Vancouver (much bigger - but a $120 return ferry trip) - If I can find them there, I'll buy them real soon, but duties/US exchange etc (see Darksword Armoury Post) means I need longer to save Maybe us Canucks will need a $600 and under forum......

Hey, if anyone is interested in discount blades , then check out this site a fellow sbg'er emailed me - swordsandcues.com - they've gone out of business so they might be shady, but if you use ebay, paypal will protect you - their seller id is swordsandcues. The new price on their site is usually more - on ebay, these beauties are only $88 US!!!

I ordered a pair trhe other day which arrived tonight. I havn't done any cutting or anything woth them yet so far I am really impressed, they look amazing pictures simply don't do them justice! They are so light you barly feel them in your hands and in fact they are lighter than my wooden training pair, lol. The only drawback I found on mine was that on one of them the handles the leather has simply come loose(nothing a little glue can't fix) an the blades where covered in a really thick coat of oil. The oil was a lot thicker than your standard sword oild and took me a few minutes to remove it all. They are great I love them 9/10!

nice, musashi! I ended up not getting these, so I was glad to see someone get them - do you train in Wing Chung? I checked some out in town here, and when the lady asked me if I did, and I said no, she gave me the worst look, like I was gonna use them to kill someone or something....

No I don't train in Wing chun at the moment, but when I move I am going to start. I figure when I start up I will need them at some point and even if that isn't for a few years, they still look reall good with my sword collection, lol.

Yah, I'm not trained in WC at all and they were to be my first. I figured that as a home defense weapon against your avereage meth-head, two big f'n knives in hand would get the point across even against someone who has some basic training in some martial art... and they look awesome on that base up on the wall, waiting to be put into service...

Me and the Dave(friend who helped me with my black belt test) ended up making him a pair out of a couple of machetes cause he had been wanting a pair but didn't want to pay a lot for them. Actually turned out really well. Wish I had a picture of them.
