It turns out that it's my favourite part of the year. Tax return time. Conveniently, this year I'm also doing a bit of bonus work for the reserves, so I'm getting a decent amount of income coming in.
So as a reward to myself, after I clear out a couple of things a portion of that income is going onto a pair of Jian.
Put an order in with Jin-Shi, however, I've been informed that he's getting some new fittings coming, molded straight off an antique, so I won't be getting them until around Sep-Oct. Do I need to say just how awesome this is?
Anyway, excitement abounds, there will be reviews of them. One being blunt, but with san-mei construction and folding, the other a sharp mono-steel for cutting.
I can hardly wait.

At the moment I'm running with the custom the, pommel of which is my profile pic. And 2 mujians for sparring and currently forms training. The blunt will be used to replace them for forms training.

Wow, can't wait to see them! Does Garrett have a catalog of his new fittings? I'll order mine like next week  (It will be a VERY long summer of waiting for both of us) Your snake jian is simply beautiful! would you consider it is a good idea to cut with folded/frost-snow blade?

I haven't seen the catalog of his new fittings, but I know how good Garrett is and trust him with his opinion.
Thanks, it's an absolutely amazing jian.
Starting off with cutting? No, it's not a good idea. it's not as forgiving on your edge alignment. Plus mono-steel is a LOT cheaper.
However, once you've practiced and are pretty good with you're cutting, then it's definitely worth the extra sensation in a sanmei, folded steel blade.

Well I'm not a total beginner, and I don't aim at heavy cutting (well i may be tempted for some mats eventualy, plus, I like the Idea that it must be tough enought for a zombie apocalypse, that is to say any crazy wartime emergency sittuations...) I feel that i would appreciate the feel of such a blade a lot, I think it has a particular "vibration" to it... maybe more expensive, but I prefer to invest in one very nice sword and cherish it than to finnaly have to buy a new sword every few times just like one change underwears... That said, I undestand the concern nonetheless, and I know you are right at some point... I consider 5160 spring steel as well... I think folded steel can be very good when done by a skilled blade smith, and I trust jin-shi products quality, so i wonder how much such a blade is more fragile...if its almost the same but only more expensive, i may want one... if it is not reliable enought, well I'll go for monosteel... (and now I tell myself maybe I should do a new post for my issues, hehehe)

It's not that the folded steel swords are more fragile. But that they are more rigid and likely to take a set. They're also better at cutting heavier targets when you have good edge alignment. All due to their rigidity.
Due to the way folded steel and mono-steel act just as their base properties, that's a natural state of affairs. Folded steel is definitely better, just as resilient, but you need to be able to cut properly with them to start, if they get twisted in the cutting, they have a higher chance of not bouncing back.

All that is pretty encouraging, I think I may go for the folded... About the last point, I wonder if a spring steel folded blade is possible (I have the intuition it is not the best idea but i don't realy know why) Now the only thing I have to worry about is being able to choose the fittings

LibrabysAnother reason why one might not want to cut with a folded steel blade is because you'd scratch up that pretty polish you've got on the blade that makes the patterns nice and visible. Also, it's not a durability problem, but when you're cutting (particularly if you've just started), there's always a possibility that something may go wrong and you'll be left with a damaged sword (whether or not it's a folded or monosteel blade). It'd be a bummer to damage a nice and expensive folded blade, y'know? Stuff like that. Hm... speaking of which.... It's summer. I should probably start cutting again. The piles of recyclables are getting a bit large. Either way, good luck on your purchase, and give us plenty of pics! Pics make the forumites happy! (I'm such a hypocrite... a camera-less hypocrite.)
