I herd back from a long time SCA fighter. This guy has been fighting for over 30 years. Here he is responding to the idea of the rope dislocating peoples arms. He is also responding to my question on how to best block a flail since it has the ability to bend around a shield.

I think I would be tempted to swing a flail if somebody had one, but I'd be sure to swing it high above my head. The chain weapons I would never care to swing would be a morning star or a kusarigama.

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong, but technically, the morning star doesn't have a chain. The ball and spikes are attached to the handle. However, the terms morning star and Flail are now used interchangeably.

Here's some info I picked up from wikipedia * Unlike a sword or mace, it doesn't transfer vibrations from the impact to the wielder. * It is difficult to block with a shield or parry with a weapon because it can curve over and round impediments such as shield or weapons and still strike the target. * It provides defense whilst in motion. How does it defend while in motion? Much like nunchukas defend in motion by spinning in a figure 8 pattern in front of you.

I have beaten myself pretty good with a whip chain and the three section staff, both VERY hard to master flexible weapons.
