Sorry for some of our reactions here. Accusharps were made for sharpening knives and scissors, which have different edge geometries than katanas and other types of swords. As such, an accusharp can mess up the edge geometry commonly seen on Kat' ... However, accusharp can still be useful for simple, easy sharpening, if lightly used.
Besides, what's improtant is that your sword edges are as sharp as you like and do what you expect them to do.

Thanks Sebastien...I'm not too concerned about the reactions, and am happy with the edge I achieved using the accusharp followed by a wetstone.
Moderation is useful...even in sharpening a sword, and I can see how you could kill a nice looking edge attacking with a accusharp. However, you can do the same thing with nearly all the recommended methods in this thread if you go at it like a madman.

HAVE BEEN USING ACCUSHARP PRODUCTS ON MY KNIVES AND SWORDS FOR YEARS. ALWAYS HAPPY WITH THE OUTCOME. DON'T BE HAP HAZARD ABOUT. TAKE YOUR TIME. MAKE SURE YOUR ACCUSHARP IS AT THE CORRECT ANGLE AND FINE TUNE WITH A SHARPENING STONE AT THE END. I NEVER REPLACE BLADES, THE SHARPENERS ARE SO CHEAP AND LAST SO LONG IT PAYS TO BUY A NEW ONE WHEN AND IF NEEDED.

I picked up this thread from Paul's October newsletter. I have a Munetoshi Bushido Beater Katana 1065 Steel (apparently now discontinued). I've had it for half a year and have yet to use it on anything. Why? I'm afraid to sharpen it. I have milk jugs and sword shipping cartons galore waiting to be carved up. But, there is an overload of information on how to sharpen a kat. It seems as though every thread about sharpening has a link which redirects one to another link which redirects one to another link, ad infinitum. Use an Accusharp or a whetstone? Use a belt sander or sandpaper on a block? How does one use a whetstone (draw the blade away from the stone or forward on the stone?). Draw the blade across the sandpaper or draw the sandpaper along the length of the blade? I am so confused and likely not to find an easy answer.

I have accusharp knife sharpener and its really useful in sharpening my knife collection.It is a Christmas gift from my friend.

On some unsharpened swords like old Del Tins with the thicker edge, I have used an accusharp followed by files and sanding.

I have used accusharp on cheap swords and machetes and it works fine enough (would never bring one near my KC Katana though). It makes hacking through saplings much easier than leaving the edge dull for sure. I have had much better results using files, but an accusharp is nice to have when out in the forest. It does a quick job of touching up an edge for those long trips deep in the woods when a machete may see heavy and frequent use. I wouldn't use it on a dojo sword, again, but for a tool or a frequently used cutter that does not require the best of edges, I think it's fine.

Accusharps will make your edge thin and brittle.
As long as you are cool with that, then there is no need for fuss

with stones and paper, if you are changing/creating then you can carefully push and pull. when its all set and you are ready to polish it out (99% of sharpening) then you always lead the stroke with the edge, this prevents the formation of a burr along the edge. obviously for safety's sake push the sword away from you with the edge in the lead.

This is true. The edges made from an accusharp also need frequent touch ups because of this. I forgot to mention that.
