So you guys should check this website out. I found it by looking through a particularly volatile thread in the old proboards forum. ENJOY!! www.enlightenmentswords.com/prod ... _hook.html

Hook swords aren't really my thing (their use is too complicated for me), but those are really gorgeous. I'm used to seeing the cheap, 20$ sets that look like they were stamped out and given a bevel, even if they're not sharp.

They look amazing but aren't they a bit heavy?

No particularly. 2.8lbs is relatively normal for a fully mounted sword, whereas the cheap 420 stainless versions of hook swords that I commented on looking stamped out are 1.9lbs. If these are actually forged, I'd say 2.8lbs is about right.

Very much so. That's why when I saw these it was like a breath of fresh air. I've been pretty much turned off of seeing those cheap ass swords. I'm pretty sure that those along with the floppy wushu swords are responsible for the everyone's critical view of chinese traditional weaponry.
Like Vincent said not really. But you also have to consider that these swords don't loose any weight from the tang. It is a full steel body. So for sure they'll be heavier if you account for that extra steel in the guard and handle.

That is exactly it, Polar; the same could be said for Chinese martial arts. Thanks to wushu, everyone tends to think of Chinese martial arts as flowery and lacking substance, with no real ability for self-defense. Sadly, they're mostly right when it comes to wushu, which is nearly all that's taught unless you dig deep.
An added bonus of these swords' weight is the part of nearly all hook swords forms where you link the swords. Doing so gives you a good 6-7' reach, much like a spear (although you can't thrust with them like this), but because of their shape, the dagger on the end can slice open a careless enemy or the blade on the guard could hack while at the same time getting around the enemy's guard. With something like that swinging at them, if you tried with the cheap models, they'd be batted away like a fly for their light weight. These still could be, but it would take much more to do so considering the authority these would hit with.

I didn't think about the added weight giving them that much more cutting power when swung. Good point. I do intend on learning to use hook swords at some point but for now the thought of swinging a sword around my head scares me slightly more that using a three section staff. I think I'll start with the solid weapons like a jian for now.

Well, at least with a sanjiegun, you can learn most of it with a solid staff until you're comfortable enough with the forms to move to the real thing. Although I have no clue why anyone would want to learn it; it may be very versatile, but I'll stick with a solid staff any day.
Anyways, I completely agree. I'd be afraid to swing something so delicate (even with the centripetal force holding them together, there's only a few inches, if that, holding them together when swung). I'd feel more comfortable with a 9-section whip, but then again, with the whip, if you put a cork on the end, the worst you have to worry about is a few bruises.

Well I must say, I'm not that worried, my master is quite talented and I'm sure he'd teach me well enough to not get me mortally wounded. The whip does sound fun as hell too. Gahh so many freakin' weapons to choose from. I'm deciding between a Jian and Cane at the moment.

Right now, I'm choosing between the jian and dao, though I'm considering the cane, too, but that's only because those are the only ones I have room for, else I'd be trying to decide between the staff and the spear and the pudao, as well.
