Glad to be of service, Luna. Anyway, for those who aren't picky about the exact time period or field of use, and want something less choppy-choppy and more stabby-stabby, there's the 1796 British sergeant and drummer swords. The drummer sword, specifically, has a 24" blade and might be passed off as a pirate sword if you're not an expert in the field: (Me, I have sometimes played with the idea of getting both a sergeant and a drummer version and go all daisho with them. )

Good you mention the "stabby stabby." I love the cutlass's and all, but the kid in me wants a swash-buckling/stabby/fencing sword for pirate adventures. Blame everything from "Captain Blood" up to "The Princess Bride" and "Hook." One of my dream pirate swords would be a cross between Captain Jack's sword and the vicious smallsword that Dustin Hoffman's Captain Hook uses during the final battle of "Hook." Luckily, Del Tin already makes it: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... mall+Sword

Nice one. I'd forgotten Del Tin made smallswords. Like the shape of the guard - you don't see a lot of repros of that kind.
Also, this reminds me that I need to rewatch Hook. I came across the DVD a while back but never got around to open it.

Hmmm, if you want a smallsword, I'd consider a colichemarde. Very fashionable right in the middle of the golden age of piracy (c.1680-1720) , and a good strong forte for parrying those heftier hangers and cutlasses. G. Gedney Godwin do a nice one, at just under $300... www.gggodwin.com/CartGenie/prod-7.htmReviewed on myArmoury here, www.myarmoury.com/review_ggg_ss.htmlCold steel have got one now too, a bit cheaper at KOA, kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=CS88CLMSBetween these two, I'd spend the extra for the G. Gedney Godwin sword, and indeed I've had my eye on it for a while. It's lighter and better balanced than the Cold Steel, and looks better to my eye. Cheers Marc E PS- Why isn't there a piratical emoticon with and eyepatch and an evil grin?

Regarding the Royal Sword cutlass - apparently they have a Father's Day sale tomorrow with all swords for $228. Thought I'd toss that in for general interest. Honestly, I'm not fond of colichemardes. I understand the principle, but to me it looks like a broadsword that changed its mind halfway and decided to be a smallsword instead. Though, this does lead me a bit of a mystery I recently found out about. Jonathan Hopkins contacted me at MyArmoury and notified me that Old Dominion Forge apparently supplied boarding axes and "a few swords" for Pirates of the Caribbean in 2002, as is mentioned on their website: www.olddominionforge.com/about.html2002 would indicate the first movie, Curse of the Black Pearl. Now, ODF claims this is a picture of some of the items provided or the film: Thing is, I don't recognise those swords from the movie at all. I suppose the hanger could have been used by some random pirate at some point, but I'm pretty sure I never saw a colichemarde in that movie. At any rate, it's a bit odd that they'd hire a forge like Old Dominion to provide hero weapons that apparently aren't used as such in the movie. Plus, I could find no mention of Old Dominion Forge or Kyle Willyard in the credits. So, yeah, I'm not sure what to make of all that. :?:
