How can I prevent/avoid side-to-side warpage when quenching a clayed blade?

More even heat source, evenly applied clay, even heat when normalising.

I thought it was fairly common practice for Japanese smiths to have some sort of jig set up to tweak a blade after quenching if it ended up little warped. I just had a pair of blades warp pretty badly during the quench but I think it was because I made them before I found out that the thickness of steel needs to be the same from one side to the other. I had just ground them out by eye without making any layout markings or measurements. Also they were some rather extreme shapes to begin with.
