Has anyone successfully converted a Qama sword to a Gladius?

Not that I know of but it shouldn't be difficult. Greg was going to do it, you could ask him what he was thinking of doing.

Qamas werre fashioned after the Maintz typology Gladius. After watching Roman tactics, the Persians and tribes of the Caucasus began to make their own short swords. In fact, it's likely that a few Gladii abandoned on the battlefield were actually converted into Qamas (The locals favored horn grips). Reversing the process would be most interesting. There isn't a reason in the world you couldn't do it. If you do, take pictures along the way and tell us about it.

There are still some wood guards and pommels on Albion's Moat sale for $10 each. It would make a real quick project.

I was thinking of doing this myself. I don't think it would be difficult at all. I thought about using the Qama Windless sells, though the blade is a little shorter than your average Gladius. Just re-shape the tang. Making the hilt parts should be easy as they are mostly made from wood. The guard is basically a flat piece of metal (brass usually) that is roughly oval in shape. You would just have to drill and file a slot for the tang to go through.

The problem that I ran into was that the blade was stolen by another project. Basically, I had wanted to make a hewing spear for a while, and it just so happened that when I had the scales taken off, the qama looked like the perfect spear blade. But something I did notice. After you take off the scales, be sure to add a very spherical "guard" and "pommel" back on. The easiest way to make the conversion would be to just replace the current scales with scales that would mimic the properties of a guard and pommel. Just make sure that the guard bulges out enough to stop your hand from sliding up onto the blade. I've been very temped to buy another qama and restart the quama to gladius project.

What is it that you are looking for exactly?
Do you have a specific question about an particular step in the conversion?
